interesting ... NFL teams looking at cfl teams for advice on stopping pistol and read-option offensive schemes

Have the Ravens made the call???

“The game’s looking different, the athletes are a little different at some of the key positions, and the coaching -- Wally can speak to this, but we’ve had calls over the last little while from people wanting film from the CFL about defences and how to counter an attack that now has more of a flavour of the CFL than used to be the case.”

So now Junior Seau's family is suing the NFL. I'm sorry, but this shit pisses me off. I fucking hate the fact that this country's system has made it so easy for people to be awarded money. Is there any personal responsibility anymore?

It's a valid lawsuit. The NFL should provide much better counseling and mental health programs for former players. The job puts its employees in a position to develop these issues (at an alarming rate, no less), so it is at least partially the league's responsibility to have programs in place to deal with these sorts of things.

I agree to some extent that we are in a sue society.

I know you can't cover all angles but...

Here is what it says and has said for years on the warning sticker on Riddell football helmets used by the NFL..

Warning: No helmet can prevent head injuries such as paralysis and death (is part)

For Riddell helmets:

WARNING: NO HELMET CAN PREVENT SERIOUS HEAD OR NECK INJURIES A PLAYER MIGHT RECEIVE WHILE PARTICIPATING IN FOOTBALL. Do not use this helmet to butt, ram or spear an opposing player. This is in violation of the football rules and such use can result in severe head or neck injuries, paralysis or death to you and possible injury to your opponent. Contact in football may result in CONCUSSION-BRAIN INJURY which no helmet can prevent. Symptoms include: loss of consciousness or memory, dizziness, headache, nausea or confusion. If you have symptoms, immediately stop playing and report them to your coach, trainer and parents. Do not return to a game or practice until all symptoms are gone and you have received medical clearance. Ignoring this warning may lead to another and more serious or fatal brain injury.

For Schutt helmets:

WARNING: Keep your head up. Do not butt, ram, spear, or strike an opponent with any part of this helmet or face guard. This is a violation of football rules and may cause you to suffer severe brain or neck injury, including paralysis or death and possible injury to your opponent. Contact in football may result in Concussion/Brain injury which no helmet can prevent. Symptoms include: loss of consciousness or memory, dizziness, headache, nausea, or confusion. If you have symptoms, immediately stop and report them to your coach, trainer, and parents. Do not return to a game or contact until all symptoms are gone and you receive medical clearance. Ignoring this warning may lead to another and more serious or fatal brain injury. NO HELMET SYSTEM CAN PROTECT YOU FROM SERIOUS BRAIN AND/OR NECK INJURIES INCLUDING PARALYSIS OR DEATH. TO AVOID THESE RISKS, DO NOT ENGAGE IN THE SPORT OF FOOTBALL.

What does the warning label say on the back of football helmets

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the autopsy on Seau said that he had no signs of brain damage due to concussions. Am I wrong?

Edit: I guess I am wrong...http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/10/health/seau-brain-disease/index.html

Interesting part of this story. It raises more questions than answers. How can you stop something when there didn't appear to be any signs of it?

What may be a surprise to some is that Seau was never diagnosed with a concussion in all the years he played football. That points to the bigger mysteries of the disease that scientists such as Dr. Julian Bailes, the co-director of the NorthShore Neurological Institute, hope to someday solve.

"It is not unprecedented that he didn't have a concussion history. That's part of the problem in figuring this out," Bailes said. "It seemed logical at first that it would be people with multiple concussions that would be at risk of CTE. As we've learned more, it was surprising that some of those at risk for CTE were players who did not have a history of concussion."

If as I heard the suit claims the NFL kept the results of some of their studies about repeated hits to the head quiet than I understand the suit. He played long enough ago much that we know about head trauma now was unknown. The question is what studies were done, when, and if the NFL was forthcoming with the results.

Its easy to sue. Its more difficult to be awarded settlements. Though of course we don't hear about the ones with no settlement very often.

About the only thing good out of ESPN these days is "30 for 30" - Those films for the most part are excellent. The rest, eh, not so much.

I stopped watching ESPN because they lean more towards reality tv than sports news and reporting. Even when they are showing highlights they are just making dumb sound effects and saying stupid catch phrases instead of any sort of insightful analysis. I call it the Berman/Bayless effect.
