Announcers are idiots.

You go for 2 when you are down 12 because you wanna know if you are gonna need 2 TDs or 1 TD and a FG.

If you kick, you are down 11 and could be tricked into thinking you need 1 TD +2 and a FG. So if you only get the FG, then you would not have gotten the 2 pointer later. That is assuming you had a designed play in mind. In theory, if it works now, it would have worked later and vise versa if it didn't work.
