Glad to see the Leafs held firm as I want the Oil to pay McJesus 14 shmill.
Well, their whole reason for not trading for PK is because they know they'll have to sign McDavid to a record-breaker of a deal at some point.

Stamkos is an amazing player, however, I have seen him taken out of many games. If you rough him up a bit he's a completely different player. He's a beast but to be taking up that much of a team's cap he's not worth it.
I think there's going to be some serious discord among owners come the next CBA with regards to how the salary cap is calculated when there are teams that get an unfair advantage due to their tax situation. Even if Stamkos had been willing to accept the same take-home pay to play for the crappy rebuilding team from his hometown it would've cost the Leafs $2 mil more against the cap than it does TB and it's not like the Leafs are the only team in a situation like that.

But those taxes pay for public services, so Stamkos would be paying more tax in those cities but he would also be getting much much more in return from the government.

Alright alright I can't do it, I'm done, that's as long as I can keep a straight face saying that...

The only logical solution to all of this is to get rid of the hard salary cap and maybe replace it with a soft cap luxury tax type deal. Or get rid of it all together, I'm not opposed to that either.

I think some kind of cap needs to stay in place, to protect franchises from the Howard Baldwin types of the business.

Without a Salary Cap, Jarmo Kekeleinen would bankrupt all of Ohio. I am not sure how, but he would.

Not sure what the solution could be, but there has to be a cap. We can't go back to the days where someone like Bobby Holik gets 10m.

Not sure when the "offseason" ends, particularly since the WC is starting.

I would like to move that this thread be closed if/when Kris Russell signs. That should be the formal end to the offseason, no?

Any seconder?

if the cap goes away, Mike Gillis will be first in line, applying for re-certification as an nhl player agent lol

The cap will be in place as long as Bettman and Daly are in charge.

/Hill we will die on and all that kind of jazz.

A market with more freedom can keep Bobby Holik from getting 10 million too though. It's kind of like NYC rents skyrocketing because the government has artificially limited the supply with rent control laws.

Hockey might be better served by an MLB-like system. Seems to be promoting parity pretty well there.

The Gaudreau situation seems to be getting traction in Calgary. Read he's looking for 8 million per, can't see Calgary offering him that but will they give up on one of the best players in the NHL right now? Going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

Was it this article?

Johhny Gaudreau is already worth $8 million | The Hockey News

I have faith that Treliving will get Johnny signed, but I'll be surprised if it's even close to 8 million per season on a 8 year deal.

You mean the parity of the top 11 spenders in the league over the last 10 years being 64% of the division winners, while the bottom 10 spenders only being division winners 17% of the time? That parity?

Or the parity of the top 2 spenders in each division winning the division 65% of the time? That parity?

Yes but those division winners haven't been the same teams each year now have they?
