if i remember correctly:

1. If f(c) > f(x) for all x in some open interval containing c then we say f(x) has a local maximum
at x = c.
2. If f(c) < f(x) for all x in some open interval containing c then we say f(x) has a local minimum
at x = c.
If f(x) is differentiable then the local extrema occur at the critical points i.e. where f ' (x) = 0.

thank you sir...rep. i haven't read the website yet, but hopefully it will shed some light. i have a test tomorrow and i understand a lot of the things that are supposed to be "harder" on this test, but can't wrap my head around this.
