I am unfamiliar with both the guys the A's got, but both are in A ball. They had better trust their scouts to make that deal. Two kids who are likely 2-3 years away, assuming they dont follow the same path as 95% of other prospects and fall on their faces.

I am glad I am not an A's fan...

Nottingham didn't do much of anything prior to this year. But he .326/.387/.543 in the Midwest League, which is a pitcher friendly league. The league average is .253/.320/.357. Nottingham is a 20-year-old catcher. Definitely warrants interest IMO. Mengden's struggled a bit, but Lancaster is a very difficult place to pitch.

Sickels has an article detailing the two prospects:

Evaluating Oakland's newest prospects from the Scott Kazmir Trade - Minor League Ball

Seems like a good haul for an impending free agent IMO.

That's what I'm saying. Kazmir's in the top 10 in WAR, WHIP, ERA,
? .47 era in July, and 2.38 Era for the year. That's not bad.

he's a very good pitcher. Not sure I'd call him a "#3" is what I'm getting at.

Yeah I get it. I was trying to make the point in the first post that their pitching is improved. I probably should have said #2 because McHugh isn't looking quite as good now.

I figured you meant because of McCullers. McHugh's been a bit better of late, but he's been a bit disappointing. McHugh looked like he was a legitimate breakout last year (9.1 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9, 3.11 FIP and xFIP), but his strikeout rate's seen a huge dip. His slider came out of nowhere last year and it hasn't been nearly as effective this year.

It's just hard to believe Kazmir's become an effective (if not better than before) pitcher again. He looked completely toast in 2011/12, and he couldn't even get minor leaguers out. Fun comeback.

I was thinking McHugh because McCullers has come back down to earth recently also. But still a really good rotation they have there.

to be expected from a 21-year-old pitcher.

The dropoff from Keuchel/McCullers was huge. This is a team that gave 22 combined starts to Roberto Hernandez and Scott Feldman, two crappy pitchers.

Then you're not going to like what Commish-dude said about maybe extending the trade deadline, since we now have the two WC's?
Even without the WC's it makes sense to extend it. MLB's trade deadline takes place less than 2/3's of the way through the schedule; NHL's trade deadline takes place about 77% of the way through the season, the NBA's is at about a third of the way and that's too early, too. IMO the season should be 3/4's finished by the time teams can't trade any longer.

I have to agree with this. Teams still might not know who they are on July 31st, or they might be dramatically better after one or two players return from the DL around or after the deadline. For this year's Mets, it would certainly be better if the deadline were later.

It may not happen often, but I can recall seeing teams unload a bunch of talent in July, and then go on an insane hot streak in August. It leaves a fan base wondering how things might have turned out if they had held on to those players...maybe fortunes wouldn't have been any different; sometimes you just need to make changes to shake up a roster, or getting rid of one personality leads to a looser clubhouse.

You never know how trades will wind up impacting the team. Diff. sport, but when the Raptors traded Rudy Gay to Sacramento it seemed like they were trading their best player and gearing up for a rebuild. Instead moving him actually allowed the team to move the ball better and they wound up with the best record in the NBA from that point on.

Moving a "star" or what have you and bringing up a majors-ready prospect who tears it up can change an entire team dynamic. It's crazy.

Reports in NY that the Mets are going to acquire Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from Atlanta. They haven't said what would go to the Braves but it's not believed to be any significant prospects.

I like it. They're not spectacular but they're at least professional hitters, certainly better than what we have. The best prospect we gave up is ranked 20th in our farm system and it's a pitcher of which we have plenty. Still want another bat, maybe Parts from the Brewers.

Let me just put something to bed right now. The rangers are not trading for Hamels no matter how many times Rosenthal and Evan Grant say they're talking to the Phillies.

Uribe and Johnson are definitely an improvement over the likes of Muno, Neuinhaus, or Mayberry. Unfortunately, this improves the Mets by about 4 or 5 % and they need to improve by about 25% more. Despite what Sandy says, I do not believe they can trade for someone with a large contract. No big bat is coming to Citi Field. They couldn't even get Parra for Pete's sake. They still need a Short Stop, Duda has become Ike Davis all over, and none of their lefty relievers can get lefties out. Alderson and the Wilpons never plan ahead except to expect the cheapest and barely capable replacements to be enough. As this season is proving, that is not enough.
