The next coach of the Browns won’t be Josh McDaniels – unless he changes his mind.
The New England Patriots offensive coordinator has “withdrawn from consideration” for the job, reported Adam Schefter of ESPN.
McDaniels, a Barberton, OH, native who played at Canton McKinley High School and John Carroll University, was widely perceived to be the frontrunner for the position – primarily because of GM Mike Lombardi’s previous writings about McDaniels in his former positions with various football Websites and NFL Network and Lombardi's chummy relationship with Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
According to Peter King of themmqb.com, the Browns interviewed McDaniels for 7 ½ hours on Saturday. King Tweeted that the “owner (Jimmy Haslam) loved him.”
McDaniels, 37, had an ill-fated, 28-game run as Denver Broncos head coach in 2009-10. The Broncos were 8-8 in McDaniels’ first season. He was fired in his second season with the team at 3-9.
McDaniels was one of four candidates known to have interviewed for the job to succeed Rob Chudzinski as coach. Others receiving interviews were Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Green Bay quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo. McAdoo’s interview was taking place on Wednesday, said reports.
The Browns also have expressed interest in interviewing Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase – who has told interested teams he will wait for the Broncos’ season to end – and possibly college coaches James Franklin of Vanderbilt and Gus Malzahn of Auburn.
