Josh Gordon: dumbest (former?) NFL player. I get that it was only alcohol, but the fact is that he knew that he wasn't allowed to drink under the terms of his agreement with the NFL. And then he gets busted again.

NFL suspends Josh Gordon of Cleveland Browns for at least one year - ESPN

I dunno, after reading his piece I sort of sympathize with him. He DID say it was his fault for thinking that once the season ended he was clear, but...it was literally the day AFTER the Browns season ended. Should he have checked? Sure. But, like with most sports leagues that do this, it seems predatory timing and that they were trying their best to catch him. Instead of telling him in clear terms "Hey, I know the season just ended, but keep in mind you're still open to being tested" they just surprise him with a test. I'm pretty cynical with how the NFL runs things though. Is a lot of that because of the players? Yeah, definitely...but he's been labeled as trouble and it seems like they're trying hard to find reason to get him out of the league. What confuses me: John Manziel has gotten in trouble multiple times now (not in the NFLs eyes) involving alcohol, he checks himself into rehab, and the league/Browns are right there saying "Way to go!" (which is good, he needs support), but if they think Gordon needs help, do they think this is the way to go?

I think the idea is to try to catch him unaware. If he knows it's coming, he's more likely to be able to cleanse his system and pass the test.

The difference I see between him and Manziel - or any other player really - is that Gordon has had a LOT of chances already. He was suspended previously by the league on two separate charges and also plead guilty to a DUI. All in the span of about 18 months.

Manziel on the other hand acknowledges that he has a drinking problem. Drinking is - for 99% of players, including Manziel - an acceptable activity because he hasn't been in trouble for it or any other substance issues.

Bottom line to me: playing in the NFL is a privilege that few people enjoy. If you can't keep your head on straight and not do stupid shit, you can - and should - lose that privilege. I'm all in favor of second chances, but when you're on strike 4...you're done.

He's been given so many chances it's ridiculous. What does it take for a player to be kicked out of the league? That's what I want to know.

If I'm not mistaken, I think this suspension is technically indefinite, but no less than one year.

I guess the idea being that if he successfully keeps himself clean for a full year (unlikely if the past 18 months are any indication), he can apply for reinstatement. But there would be no guarantee.

So many so called experts say everyone deserves a second chance. I get it, but Gordon has had so many it's ridiculous at this point.

Does Josh Gordon look north to the CFL? I'm not sure if it's an option for him (i.e. the CFL could enforce the suspension handed down by the NFL), but he would garner plenty of interest.

Nobody questions his talent dash. Gordon's talent is the reason he's been given so many chances to play in the NFL. For some reason he hasn't been able to stay out of trouble. Maybe the city he plays in could help. Is there a team in the CFL that plays in a city where there's zero nightlife?

Wow - Super Bowl viewership in Canada doubled the viewership for the Grey Cup game. I guess it doesn't hurt when Canada's two favo(u)rite teams are battling for the Vince Lombardi trophy.
