That is honestly a surprise. I really didn't think they'd do it.

But again, bad publicity is the driver. They have a guy on their team who beat his baby momma and poured bleach on the baby. Difference: no video. To say nothing of some of the other stellar citizens in their past.

Ah well, at least justice is served here.

Just reminds me why I appreciate the NHL more as a fan. Sure, there was that incident with Varly last season, but by and large the NHL just doesn't have a soup du jour story like this every freakin' week like the NFL seems to. I have a level of respect that is 10x greater for the people of the NHL as opposed to the NFL.

The league has suspended him indefinitely too.

The NFL and the Ravens both knew this tape was out there, but now only when it gets released do they decide to drop the hammer and try to save face. They could have semi-dropped the hammer a month ago with an indefinite suspension, but chose the unwise route.

He should have been suspended indefinitely until all evidence became available. Now that enough evidence is available, the proper action it appears has been taken.

This certainly will be treated as just another blip on Roger Goodell's radar - what a dolt of a commish he is. The league and sport has seen its apex and there is only one way to go from there if he keeps this up.

Now lets see what happens with the 49ers and Ray McDonald...

At the time (and to this day) I thought the NHL mishandled the Varly situation horribly.

But it's a far cry from the cluster fuck that this was.

You think someone would have the balls to do that? I mean, how the hell could any owner think they could weather that PR shit storm? IMO, Rice is done. Forever.

Probably not for a couple weeks at least.

But honestly, if certain teams were to lose their top tier RB to injury I could see them being willing to take a chance if it would help them on the field.

There are plenty of other teams out there with a less than stellar reputation for player discipline. There are certainly plenty of teams that wouldn't touch him under any circumstance though.

Well said.

As 43 pointed out earlier, what the hell did they think happened in that elevator anyway?

Two games was a disgrace. At least the Ravens have it right now, even if it is only to save face.

Violent, criminal behaviour should be AT LEAST a season long ban. While domestic violence is the most abhorrent form out there (violence against children being the only exception), all violence is unacceptable. These huge men beating the shit out of a normal male is, from a physical standpoint, every bit as cowardly as most men beating up on a woman.

The problem is that the NFL has turned a blind eye on violence in general. Dipshit football player beats the shit out of a dude at a strip club... meh four games. Gimme a break. Violence begets violence and if you don't bring the hammer down on a dude for ANY type of violence you open the door for the violence to escalate. Why would anyone be surprised that under that scenario a guy is going to differentiate between violence against men and violence against women.

These fucking idiots think they can get away with any of it. Largely because they've been allowed to get away with it for so long.

Lol, point taken. But, this video of Rice dropping the Holyfield uppercut on his woman is the 30 ton pink elephant standing in the room. That image just won't go away. How could anyone think they could employ this guy in 2014? At least the commish's office did something right for once and eliminated that possibility.

Not that it will happen, but Ray Rice has a chance to come out of this better than the NFL will (except when it comes to the monetary aspect).

If Ray truly feels remorse and knows what he did was wrong (like he says), Mr. Rice and his now wife should go on a speaking tour and donate all proceeds to women's shelters. He said this was the biggest mistake of his life - now he has a chance to make amends for it. Do the community outreach and If he ever gets another NFL job, at least half of his salary should also go to anti assault causes as well. Turn this around and let the NFL deal with its own image problem.

IMO if he doesn't get another shot it has more to do with his age and position than it does the incident or video.

^ Well, yeah. But I was thinking of players who were cheerfully picked up by other teams *after* their mess in response to the "who wants the negative publicity?" question.

Yeah, this does not look good for the league. Let's see what respected writers the NFL throws under the bus on this one.

I dont always agree with Goodell, but I don't think he is stupid. Part of me thinks there is no way he could have seen that video and given the two games.

These fucking idiots think they can get away with any of it. Largely because they've been allowed to get away with it for so long.

Being in Law Enforcement, I have a really big problem with organizations that help cover up or diminish serious offenses in order to save face. Because while they are protecting their own interests, they are sending a message that the terrible behaviour is acceptable, which in turn just adds more examples to the pile. This is why it keeps happening. Like a kid whose dad is a lawyer who keeps getting busted for (and getting away with) dealing drugs.

The NFL as an organization does this instinctively. The heartwarming stories about Michael Vick's second chance, etc. It's disgusting to me. And there is no doubt that it happens disproportionately more in football - hell I live in the city that is ground zero for college football poor behaviour. Art Schlicter, Terelle Pryor and the Tattoos, Maurice Clarett.

The Ravens are a favorite target of mine because I grew up in "their" city and was burned out on the hypocrisy of them even coming before they even got off the ground. And they just compounded my feelings with trying to help cover up or otherwise sweep player misdeeds under the rug - like asking for a jail sentence to be served in the offseason so as not to interfere with the reg season. But they are no worse than 90% of the teams in the league or the league itself. And honestly, while I question the motivation now, I am honestly impressed they had the guts to do this. And the ends justify the means I guess. Whatever got him out of the game is good (provided he stay out...). Al Capone went to prison for tax evasion. But the bottom line is justice was finally served. Sometimes it's an indirect path. But as long as you get there, I am usually okay with it.
