I didn't really read that as "I'm taking the year off because of the economy", Pix... but I could be wrong.

Thomas is using this as leverage against the Bruins. He knows his trade value will drop if he is saying he may take the year off and thus force the Bruins to either buy him out or keep him.

He does not want to get traded.

So the Bruins gave him a chance in the NHL and it payed off with a cup victory. Thomas was a hero in Boston and now is jamming it up the ass of the organization to get his way.

Loved ya Tim and thanks for bringing the cup to Boston but dont let the door hit you in your fucking ass.

Well...okay then. You're worried about the economy...as a millionaire. AWEsome. Be pissed B's fans.

fucking selfish prick.
if he's worried about the economy he's probably not smart enough to understand that the Bruins will suspend him for being a no-show, and he will miss out on the $3 million he is under contract for next season.
and, they have the right to port his contract, so he'd be locked up the next year too (they probably wouldn't though, just be happy to be rid of the nutbar).

another asshole quitting on his team. such a shame that he has his name on the Cup*.

*slightly biased, but I'd feel that way even if it didn't go down the way it did.

That's a theory I didn't consider. And I'm not reading this as the reason he's decided to take time off, but the timing of it is just weird. A midst all this crap swirling around him, he posts something about the economy (politically fueled) and says "This is why hockey isn't important". Does he want to get into politics in all seriousness? Otherwise it seems an odd thing to post. I mean, if you're worried about the economy you don't suddenly stop doing your job.

Also, he has financial security...and he's telling a bunch of his followers who are most likely middle class that he's worried about finances. It's like freaking Dan Ellis again.

Yes and no... It is a shame that he is acting the way he is and pretty much shitting on every Boston fan. But he really did give an out of this world performance in 2011, he deserves to be on the Cup. But he does not deserve the love we give our team night in and night out acting like this.

Rask. You're up.

Outside of the WWE, has a guy gone for lovable underdog to selfish jerk in a shorter period of time?

I'm not going to say he doesn't deserve the stuff he worked for, but I am going to say he deserves any criticism he gets from here on out. I was defending the guy for awhile there, thinking, apparently naively, that he had a perfectly legitimate reason to sit out for a year...but it seems it's not a very good one. Putting himself before his team right now. I never believed the selfish stuff, until about now. Just very bizarre.

I'm laughing at everyone making this such a big issue. He's a fucking goalie, not the president or a senator or anything. I love how Americans want every American to stay informed and get involved in politics, at least make your opinion known, unless of course you're an athlete. Then you have to keep your mouth shut. Where's the outrage when musicians or actors speak out and/or use their influence in politics? He's a fucking goalie expressing his views as guaranteed in the constitution. I guess this shows how bitter Nucks fans are over losing the cup to the Bruins.

The best goalie in the league is considering taking a year off, while under contract, and so far the response has been contained to about a half a thread... I don't think anyone's really making it a bigger issue than it is, it's just really shocking that a guy at the top of his game, the best at what he does, one year removed from a Cup and a Smythe is considering a sabbatical.

I'm also not sure that anyone is politicizing any of this. The shock and surprise in this thread has nothing to do with Thomas's political leanings, his views, or anything... his decision doesn't appear to have anything to do with his views, his opinions on politics, or have anything to do with any attempt to influence others.

The Facebook post is a little bewildering, but it doesn't seem politically motivated. He's worried about the economy, but it doesn't really look like that's his underlying reason for the year off. Really it just sounds like he doesn't want to be traded so he's making sure that doesn't happen by making this announcement. Which is a pretty big fuckin' deal if you ask me. Imagine if Crosby made that announcement....

I'd be both pissed and sad. And I'd lose a LOT of respect.

Well, I don't put Thomas on any kind of pedestal so I won't lose any sleep should he take a year off. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

You missed (or ignored) my point.

I really don't care what his, or anyone else's political views are. This is the 2nd time that he has put himself above his team, and this is the 2nd time that he has put out a controversial statement, then refused to stand behind it.

Selfish and cowardly, and it has absolutely nothing to do with him being on the bruins.
