BTW, that map like totally needs some crosshairs on it.
A big part of this ethnocentricity is that we are a big country (size wise and we have lots of livable space compared to other countries our size). We have states that are larger than some European countries. It is easier for someone in Switzerland to travel internationally than it is for me to get to Oregon.
Also our media gets broadcast and distributed around the world, a very small percentage comes back the other direction (in comparison). We are the most advertised and accessable country. Plus our history is a fraction of other countries. It is a lot easier to get a rundown of the US than it is China (anyone want to recap the three kingdoms period for me in 15 minutes? Anyone?).
If you poll poor and/or uneducated people in any country they aren't well traveled. But we are big, loud, and cocky so people like to take shots. No one ever complains about Papau New Guinea's lack of understanding of the Asain stock market or India's art history.
I find this whole thread shallow and pedantic.
I agree with this, though only if my religious views are homogeneous with yours.
I think the point of this graphic is not so much that people don't like it here and should move elsewhere (agree, Loki, stupid argument), but that Americans are frequently unaware of the world around us. There are a lot of perfectly fine, self-serving reasons for that, but in a country that has the financial resources and higher education that we do, it is a little sad.
I love people who say "If you don't like it here, move to X!"
Yes, because freedom of speech and a national dialogue that encourages change are not two of the things this country was founded on.
Everybody likes to take a shot at America and Americans, but as soon as a disaster happens, who's the first Country that is there? There are millions of Americans who devote their time, money, and efforts helping out people less fortuante than them all over the World. Perhaps they should just focus their efforts on all the suffering people in the US instead?
At this point in Haiti, the US has donated over $100 million in aid, while the next Country has donated just over $18 million.
Yeah, I went there.

Yeah, I went there.
Do you think perhaps having a different president would have resulted in us spending less money on Haiti relief?
Or more??
Why are you guys insinuating that being cultured isn't important? Aren't you better off and more well rounded the more you know about things outside of your own life? Maybe it's just me but I like learning about other countries and cultures. It's interesting. Not that I am not interested in my own! Hell, I like to consider myself half-Rockabilly. And if Rockabilly isn't all-American, I don't know what is!
That is a big scene where your from.
