But it's not like Bumgarner has played that much more in the postseason.

So again, Why is Bumgarner great in the postseason, and why is Kershaw awful in the postseason.

Bumgarner has pitched 73% more playoff innings that Kershaw. That's significant.

Well he also faces much better pitching in the postseason on the whole than he does in the regular season.....there's a reason why you rarely see great hitters with large sample sizes hit as well in the playoffs.

Same reason good pitching beats good hitting in the playoffs. It's why the oh so powerful offenses of Texas in 2010 and Detroit in 2012 got smoked by the Giants.

The overwhelming probability is the SSS effect- the reverse is probably true for Bumgarner as well- though the run he had should be respected nonetheless as it was historically effective. MLB is almost nothing like the NBA or NFL in regards to playoffs building a player's legacy I would argue.

But it's not like Bumgarner has been so terrible pitcher in the regular season. He's actually been great in the regular season and then even better in the postseason.

Yeah, prior to this year, he was really only good in World Series games. The other playoff starts were collectively pretty bad.

In 2012 he was bad except in game 2 of the World Series.

I didn't even bother bringing up his all time great World Series stats.

He was very good in 2010 as well.

You're just completely falling for the SSS fallacy. Barry Bonds looked bad in the postseason until he wasn't in 2002. As of now, Kershaw has better regular season stats and worse post season ones. He will be back and I bet he pitches some good games. But Bum is a playoff legend and I know who I'd rather have in the playoffs.

In the regular season Kershaw is a bit better.

What's that?

Then there's Joe Buck... :L

"Harold, could we be witnessing the greatest pitching performance in the history of post-season baseball?"

"I don't think there's any denying it, Joe."

"Can I get in on this BJ too, fellas?" - Verduci

Joe Buck... UGH!

I've got no fandom invested in either team, but I was really pulling for the Royals to blast a walk-off homer in the 9th if for no other reason than to witness Buck uncomfortably spit Bumgarner's testicles out of his mouth.

And yet Kershaw blows out Bumgarner in the regular season as of late. This is apt to comparing Peyton Manning to Joe Flacco the year the Ravens won the super bowl.

Kershaw's FIP the past three years- 1.81, 2.31, and 2.89.

Bumgarner: 3.05, 3.05, and 3.50.

It's not even remotely close.

One can certainly question his choice of pitches against the Cardinals, particularly in game 1, but I don't think that result, even so, is repeated once out of 100 times the way the Cardinals have dominated him... though that could be theoretically some weird schtick where the Cardinals just so happen to have a collection of hitters that see Kershaw well. It's certainly raises an eyebrow, but a choker label seems incredibly premature at this point in time knowing what kind of peculiarities we see in any given game, and the season at large-- which is built on anomalies to begin with.

I'm down with that.

I've always said, pitching wins championships. Except when it doesn't.

I would say that there's not much question that Kershaw is the better pitcher. That said, I don't think it's crazy if someone would prefer to have Bumgarner on their team.
