A lot on that list were forced out by health. A few more wanted to be celebrities and not athletes.

But the top of the list is pretty accurate.

You could say too early for some of these guys. For sure Barry Sanders and Jim Brown. But many of these guys could no longer play at a high level. Calvin Johnson seemed to be injured all the time. Bo Jackson's career was over with that hip injury. He could no longer play. I know Patrick Willis had a chronic turf toe injury which he gave up half a season for. The surgery did not fix his issues. While he could still play with the Turf Toe, he could no longer move like he used to. I remember even before it was widely reported, reporters covering the team were commenting on how much slower he was.

Bo had some highlights in the NFL, but not even close to being a hall of famer in any sport, Deion is a Hall of Famer and was pretty great in the 1992 World Series even with playing a broken bone in his foot.

I guess it's how you term 'retire too early.' I mean....I would've loved to see more from all time talent from a lot of the guys mentioned. Before when the dreaded ACL type injuries were a death sentence more than not....it really woulda been something to see a full career from the likes of Kellen Winslow or William Andrews. That is all time talent. Or other injury-cut careers like Sterling Sharpe and Tony Boselli.

Then there are cases like John Jefferson, whom I still regard as one of the best 5 or 10 receivers I've ever seen. Then just mentally checked out.

'Retire too early' implies guys who simply walked away when he still had more to give IMO.

Billy Sims. I often wonder if some of those players (Gale Sayers) had the sports medicine they have now. What kind of recovery to their careers they might have.

Sims was another in the Winslow/Andrews mold. Displayed enough talent to show he was HOF material, but cut down by ACL. Another guy like that was Dwight Stephenson - perhaps the best C of his generation.....but he did get his HOF due, so...
