Feet first slide. Have we ever had a qb that could do this?
Aaron Rodgers might be the best in the league.

If this kid can do it, a world class athlete should be able to .

I don't get it. When I played baseball and we had guys with sliding issues, we got a slip and slide and got them used to getting down on that. Once they understood the mechanics of a proper slide (a slip and slide makes that very easy), they could do it on the base paths.

I actually think he didn't know the rule, there's so many, it could happen and if he didn't he does now.

In his presser he said that the rule was originally made after Eli fumbled that way a couple years ago, but was changed back at the start of this season, thus resulting in that play being a fumble. I don't think he knew the rule, either, but I don't think him knowing the rule changes the outcome - still a lost fumble. Would just change his initial reaction to the play. The ball bounced right into a Lion defender, we didn't have anyone near it to make a play.

What difference does it make if he knew the rule or not? He still shouldn't have slid face first with the ball exposed. The point is he doesn't know how to slide. Its not natural for all. he needs to practice it. He tends to drop down on his knees first. You have to get your ass on the ground with your feet up. You slide on your hip, not your knees.

To be fair to RG3 on this...

Isn't there a much higher risk of injuring your knee on a traditional slide than a face-first slide?

Feet first you can catch your foot and jam your leg back into yourself. Face first about the worst thing that can happen is knocking the wind out of yourself or giving yourself a stinger on your shoulder (and they have pads on).

wasn't he diving forward when he got the knee injury? (honestly don't remember)
the reason for sliding feet 1st is it is giving yourself up so the QB doesn't get creamed by a big ol Defender. Head 1st the Qb gets to get creamed by a big ol' defender. adding in that factor I say sliding feet 1st is safer.

Sounds like logical problem solving to me.

You are absolutely correct - see the 18 second mark of this video. I think you can be pretty sure that RG3 won't make this mistake again.

He just did this week, so apparently he didn't learn from his first mistake. He was still live and the ball was live this weekend. Had a defender been a little closer to dive on him as Nata did, he could have been hurt again. Waiting to throw a ball out of bounds until a defender had you wrapped up (which caused the interception) this past weekend was another fatal mistake by Griffin as well. For a guy who seems so damn smart, he sure is as stubborn as a mule sometimes...

Robert Griffin III open to receiving professional sliding tips
Robert Griffin III open to receiving professional sliding tips

Robert Griffin III still must work on learning how to slide. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said he would be open to the idea of receiving advice on how to improve his sliding. Whether serious or not, Griffin said that he could enlist the services of Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.
“If Bryce wants to do that, I’m definitely up for that,” Griffin said before pointing to the camera and saying, “Bryce, so, we can do that if you want to.”
Ever since his knee injury, Griffin has heard the importance that he learn how to slide on runs to protect himself from violent hits.
On Sunday, Griffin struggled in that area, taking an awkward seated plop to avoid a hit near the sideline at the end of a third-quarter run, and then fumbling during a head-first dive on a fourth-quarter play that killed a potential scoring drive.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said on Monday that Griffin still is learning how to slide, because at Baylor and in high school, the quarterback never had to do so.
Griffin said his struggles in the sliding department are more mental than anything, but that he’s trying to correct those problems.
“The thing of the problem is, I’m not a great slider, should I say?” he said with a grin. “I know how to slide. I don’t know how to baseball slide, and I think that’s what they’re talking about. But there’s just an emphasis on sliding feet-first as opposed to going forward since that rule’s in place. It protects you as a quarterback when you’re going feet-first, so that’s what I’m going to do. I’ve got to make a mental note of that and try to slide feet-first.”
Griffin confessed that he hasn’t practiced sliding since training camp. Asked what that work consisted of he said, “You basically run up to a defender and you slide.”
The quarterback added, “It’s harder [in practice]. It’s easier to slide with football pants on. The slickness of the pants – I know I’m going into detail – but the slickness of the pants helps you slide. But when you have shorts on and stuff like that, it’s less conducive to sliding. But I have.”

If there is a chance to catch your feet you're sliding wrong.

This is very true. I've seen it happen many times resulting in broken bones and torn ligaments. If you slide correctly, you slide on your hip/butt and your feet should be off the ground. RG3 does not do this yet. He still kinda falls/slides on his knees. Not pretty.

No - I meant that he won't make this mistake after fumbling against the Lions. Live & learn - it comes with the territory. He will get there.
