What are you guys' thoughts on the MLB now changing the rules of contact with the Catcher at Home plate? heard yesterday they were talking about rule changes now because of this incident. Me personally I think it would be dumb, this was an unfortunate accident, but contact at the plate is just part of the game. Adds that little bit of excitement to the play and contact to baseball. Also the Catcher is the one wearing all the gear.

I don't think any rule change is required. Just enforce the rules that are already on the books. At any other base if a fielder blocks the base without the ball that's obstruction and the runner is safe, and if the runner runs into the fielder to knock the ball away that's interference and the runner is out. There's nothing in the rules that makes plays at home any different, it's only by custom that they don't enforce them at home. Is it part of the game? Sure, it is now. But you watch any old baseball games on ESPN Classic and see what the players of previous generations looked like before anyone discovered weight training? Trust me, it was a lot easier for Mike Scioscia to absorb the contact when 90% of the runners looked like Bake McBride or Craig Reynolds. If he were playing today and trying to block the plate as much as he used to he'd never make it through a season healthy.

To me, if you want contact, stick with football.

A number of problems with this post:

1. The existing rules don't need to be changed, they simply need to be enforced and there would be no legal collisions at the plate.
2. The play at the plate was never designed to be "part of the game."
3. Catcher's gear does not protect catchers from home plate collisions -- the gear is to protect from foul balls.

There are other threads here which deal with the rules pertaining to home plate collisions; you might want to read those.

Well, it's official. Posey is done for the year. He underwent sucessful surgury that placed 2 screws in his ankle. In about 8 weeks, he will under-go another surgury to remove the screws, setting him out the rest of the season.

Yup. I have to knock my superscientific prediction model down again. I figured at season's start we had about a 75% chance to win the division. Posey goes down for what looked like 2-3 months...55%. Now? 45-50%?

And good ol' Grabsum on DumDumVille, calling for Posey to have a miraculous appearance later this year anyways. God love 'im.

I'll take 45-50% right now. I'm starting to fear the worst, i.e. that this team just can't win on a consistent basis without Buster. Somebody slap some optimism back in me. I usually am very optimistic about the Giants, but these past few games without Buster, I've come to realize how big of a loss this was. He was the one player who was involved in all three phases of the game and the player we could least afford to lose. And, the options for replacing him are very limited.

While it's true that Buster was more valuable to his team than any other player in baseball -- and that's not hyperbole -- it's also true that we have the best pitching staff 1-12 in the game. When you have pitching, you're in almost every game. We'll be OK. Panda is due back in less than two weeks.

There's no way to sugarcoat this, Posey going down was a huge bomb. We could easily miss the playoffs now. But we still have as much chance as Colorado and more than Arizona. It is what it is.

Like tzill says, the pitching keeps us alive.

As far as the offense goes Posey replaced 2009 Panda as centerpiece of the lineup. 2011 Panda could replace 2010 Posey.

They may have no choice but to go outside of the organization for the offensive upgrade.

But at what position?

It's not going to be at catcher. No ones going to give up even half of what Posey was without giving up Wheeler. And at that point, may as well go after Reyes.

I think this team is what it is, I don't see any big changes coming anytime soon.
