+1. This hypothetical older player with a gruesome injury. He wouldn't happen to resemble a certain super-utility guy with a hot wife and the initials M.D.,would he? Why hasn't he announced his retirement, by the way? Would he not get his money? Does he actually think he is going to play professional baseball again someday?

MMMMM.....Heiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Wow, I missed the entire point of you saying that you "hate this thread and it's existence" thing. :L

We all do from time to time.....that's what I like about all the posters here. All of you feckers are smart (or at least smarter than me, lol), but you also speak off the cuff like me sometimes too. At least you have a heart. Mine was ripped out in Vancouver.

Isn't that what they call "damning with faint praise?"

BTW, my wife is a Vancouverite....you didn't have to deal with my brother-in-law's incessant texting during game 5.....

I just listened to the press conference with Dave Groeschner and he said the 6-8 week estimate INCLUDES rehab. I'm going to remain optimistic and say that he'll be a solid contributor at the catcher position in September.

Yeah I'm just not buying that at all. Keep in mind that it's in the Giants' interests to paint the most optimistic picture to keep up fan interest and ticket sales this year, while every doctor I'm hearning who's not affiliated with the Giants is saying rehabbing from this type of injury is going to take quite a bit longer.

So keep the faith but I wouldn't get your hopes up based on anything you're hearing from the Giants right now.

8 weeks from now is July 22. We probably all agree that'd be a medical miracle. So 13 weeks is August 26. That may or may not happen, but doesn't seem totally far fetched.

As I mentioned before, Posey is quite young and young bodies heal more quickly than old ones.

As I also mentioned, the team's standings will probably dictate some of the decision...if we are way ahead or behind he will likely take his time. If we are battling he may get out there ASAP. Unfortunately, I can't see us being way ahead.

...or way behind either. I'm sticking with him playing meaningful games behind the dish in September.

Looks like in the Posey interview he thinks he's done for the year.

So there's that.

:puke:

Who ya gonna believe, the Giants' spin machine or a gamer like Buster?

Leading question (and I assume rhetorical)! :) Yeah. Shitty. What do you think about his immediate response that he will go right back to catching? I would assume he truly believes it. Is it his decision? Should it be? Is that what you want?

I think he should have major input obviously, but it's not all up to him. I definitely want him catching but maybe not every day, maybe a little more 1B mixed in.

Yeah. It bums me out that his arm might be wasted by taking more days at first, but he certainly isn't gonna be any quicker for the other infield positions after the injury (unless there is some freak healing process like in Rookie of the Year ). Obviously, there will be a long evaluation period, but more days at first for Posey would mean more days in left for Belt. Depending on how he does out there, he might become trade bait. It's amazing how much impact one injury can have on an organization's long term plans.

It's a tough call. I think it comes down to positional value. He's a great hitter as a catcher, but as a first baseman, he probably would only be above average. Also, as has been mentioned, you can't overlook his defensive value as a catcher.

Keep in mind that Posey is speaking from a place of pain and disappointment. He may not come back this year, but I don't think anyone knows until he actually has the surgery.

I haven't given it a ton of thought or analysis, but I think I'd prefer Posey at 3rd all things equal. I think Panda would be better at 1st long term.

I like the idea of Posey at third. He would be a good-hitting 3B. I play fantasy baseball, and it's not that easy to find a good bat at 3B.

I think the transition to 3B would be the best fit for a catcher of his abilities - strong arm, quick reaction time, not much a need for speed. Basically everything asked from Sandoval now.

I'd prefer Posey at C; Panda at 3b, and Belt at 1b.

Which is EXACTLY how it will likely play out.

What year are you talking about? I'm thinking long term. In 3 years, hopefully Buster is at some stage of his transition to another position. I hope it's 3rd.

Agreed. The only question to me is whether Posey's ankle will allow him to catch again without risking recurring injury and though we can't be sure for a while yet I trust from everything I've heard that the prognosis on that is good. And as long as Panda keeps himself in shape I no longer see any clock ticking on moving him to 1B either.

If it's determined that Posey shouldn't return to catching because of the ankle then my backup preference would be Sandoval at C, Posey at 3B and Belt at 1B and my third choice would be Sandoval 3B, Posey 1B, Belt LF.

What are you guys' thoughts on the MLB now changing the rules of contact with the Catcher at Home plate? heard yesterday they were talking about rule changes now because of this incident. Me personally I think it would be dumb, this was an unfortunate accident, but contact at the plate is just part of the game. Adds that little bit of excitement to the play and contact to baseball. Also the Catcher is the one wearing all the gear.
