This may be in another thread but it deserves its own.

MLB TV reporting he's done for 2011.

My initial reaction (on DumDumVille) was it's all over. And it probably is.

But our already not so hot division was made less so when DeLaRosa went down. So a lot of things have to break our way, like Belt and Panda being able to really produce, and Huff getting going, and everyone else keeping at it.

They may also be debating now whether it does indeed make sense to mortgage the future to get a guy like Reyes for just this year, when we obviously need something.

So the chances now go from about 75% to win the division down to maybe 55% in my book. And that's if a lot goes right. Karmic payback for the loss.

What happens in the playoffs then? Sheesh, who knows.

What do you guys think: sell the farm to try to fill the Posey loss now? Or just pray we get enough from what we got and look to 2012+ to be really good again?

Apparently, we're calling up Chris Stewart and Rholo from AAA.

The Giants don't have to sell the farm. They need to get a replacement catcher for Posey and then have other guys like Huff and Burrell and Belt step up and do the job at the plate in his absence.

Ivan Rodriguez in Washington should be available cheap. The Nats have Wilson Ramos tearing it up behind the plate and need to give him more ABs anyway. They can find a backup anywhere.

Or Sabean needs to call Benjie Molina and get him to come back to the Bay Area.

Neither one of those guys is going to replace Posey at the dish. But either one would do an adequate enough job defensively.

MLB is reporting broken ankle and possibly torn knee ligaments.

Unless he is getting Tommy John surgery, too, I don't know why he would miss any part of 2012 with the injuries that I've seen reported. With modern medicine the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if he is back for the playoffs this year.

No. Haven't heard that. But, worst case, assuming he has a torn acl and meniscus damage, I could see him not catching in 2012, or ever again. Gonna be tough to do much rehab until the broken leg/foot heals.

Marcus makes one really good point though:

My point: If Any of the big money players had run into Posey odds are they slide or try to go around the throw. Cousins had nothing to lose Posey has everything to lose.

That is a good point.

The other fact that has been bouncing in my head since the play...

You gotta play hard, but keep things in perspective.

This is why I want there to be a discussion about a rule change. Not sure where I would end up on that fight, but I want to hear the arguments.

I don't know, man. Yes, it's a good point that big money players try to save themselves, but I'm sure Cousins is fighting for a roster spot every spring training. He will never make the amount of money that Buster Posey will make in his career, but that doesn't make that play any less crucial for him.

I'm not saying that if Cousins doesn't score that run, he won't be on a major league roster next season, but it sure can't hurt. He showed his coaches and teammates that he is willing to do anything to win. Guys like that are appreciated in any clubhouse (though, I'm certain he will never be a Giant now). He will get plunked. Maybe not today. Maybe not next series, but he will be in pain at the hands of a Giants pitcher. Not exactly eye for an eye, but baseball justice will be served.

Awful news, but I still have faith. This division isn't too hard to win and anything can happen in the playoffs, especially with our pitching.

Wait. You mean the sky isn't falling? A little more good news out of a bad situation: Buster can spend some quality time with his wife, who I believe is still pregnant with twins. For those of you that have gone through the miracle of child birth, maybe he would enjoy himself more outside of the house during the pregnancy time, but I'm sure he will be able to commiserate with his wife a little better now. Happy wife, happy life. Happy home, more home runs upon return?

Posey's career could be over. Let's get that out there. So Cousin's "decision" could have cost Buster $150,000,000. And, if I were a star on a team, would I want scrubs like Cousins on every team just waiting to take me out so they can show what a team player they are?

But, theoretically, if retaliation were to be called for, you would not hit Cousins. you'd take out Stanton, or one of the other young stars. But stuff like that just isn't done much anymore.

I hadn't even thought of that, but that's a great point. I'm sure that Buster and his wife have already seen the silver lining of this. There's gotta be nothing tougher about being a pro athlete than the fact that you always have to be on the road and away from your family.

1) This sort of stuff would be done if guys like Bob Gibson were managing!

2) Why not have a designated enforcer on the team, like in hockey? "Yo, Bubba, their pitcher is throwing too well. Go out there, and if the ball comes close to you, charge the mound."

And it's definitely not over. After pitching, the biggest strength of this team is its depth. I have faith that someone will step up.

I understand that Posey's career could be over, but I don't think it is. I'm certainly not a doctor, but I have seen many people recover much quicker than expected from broken ankles and ligament damage. If his career is over, that is definitely a huge bummer for Buster the person, player and member of a would-be weakened Giants organization. I am also a firm believer that any athletes career could end on any play. Ken Griffey, Jr. pulled his hamstring from the bone chasing down a fly ball. Extenuating circumstances, but Dave Dravecky broke his arm throwing a pitch... twice.

I don't think Cousins was head-hunting. He was trying to score a run. There is a big difference between the player you described in your question and a guy trying to continue playing Major League Baseball. He knows Nate Schierholtz has a great arm. He knows Buster Posey will do whatever he can to apply the tag. He knew he was going to have to run into Posey to score. Every time I watch that replay, despite the bad hop, I am certain that Cousins would have been out if tried to take that outside path. The impending contact and the eventual contact made it a certainty that the Marlins would get that run. He made a smart play, in my opinion. I didn't like any part of the outcome, but I would expect a teammate to make the same decision, star player or not.
