I think that the trades were needed to revive San Diego's fan base interest. However, these are a lot of Power bats that may not play the best in Petco Park even with the fence brought in.

In fact, I think the 2015 San Padres is a lot like the 2014 Atlanta Braves. A 2014 Atlanta Braves team that finished 79-83 in a division that wasn't quite as tough as the 2015 NL West.

From an offensive standpoint

Justin Upton = Justin Upton (No surprise there)

Freddie Freeman = Matt Kemp (I think they are similar offensive players. Kemp has more upside, Freeman is more consistent.)

Evan Gattis < Derek Norris ( Derek Norris is the better and more consistent hitter, and is less injury prone)

Jason Heyward > Wil Myers ( As much of a difference as there is between Norris and Gattis. I think that gap is closed between the difference between Heyward and Myers. and effectively make all 4 of the ones compared equal.)

Andrelton Simmons > Alexi Amarista

Chris Johnson = Yonder Alonso (Yonder could leapfrog Johnson here, but as it stands right now they are equal)

Tommy La Stella = Jedd Gyorko (We have seen what Gyorko can do, but if last year is any indication. La Stella was actually better than Gyorko, but taking everything into account they are roughly the same in terms of what they will produce and can produce in the future if Gyorko's 2014 is any indication.)

Will Middlebrooks >> B.J. Upton (You could put anyone here and they would easily beat Melvin)

Teheran > Shields (This one is very close but I have to give Teheran the edge by the slightest of margins)

Wood < Ross (Ross is a little bit better than Alex Wood, but the difference is closer than you think)

E. Santana > Morrow or Despaigne

Benoit = Walden

Kimbrel = Kimbrel

Bud Black >>>>> Fredi Gonzalez

Harang = Cashner (2014 Harang was really good. I expect the same numbers from Cashner if he stays healthy.)

I think this team is a virtual tie for the 2014 Braves. The monster difference being the manager. Bud Black being one of the best in baseball and Fredi Gonzalez being the worst. So we will see how Bud Black can mold this team. The 2014 Braves had more talent than to be a 79 win team, but we will see what AJ Preller's assembled team can do, because in my view he acquired roughly a 79 win team from a year ago and is hoping the manager difference will get The Padres over the hump. Things in the clubhouse will get interesting when Melvin comes back.
