I'm probably still just overrating Matt Barkley's ability, but I thought that team was capable of great things.

Honestly, I thought Barkley was really good, he had the misfortune of getting an angry Stanford defense early in the season his last season, with a back up center. A game like that, where he spent a lot of time on his back had to take a fair amount of confidence out of him.

Even prior to the hire I thought it was terrible. Kiffin was garbage with the Raiders and the Volunteers only improved modestly during his first season there. As a college football fan I always liked watching USC play, which was why I thought the hiring was such a shame.

Some were skeptical of Carroll's ability as an NFL coach when the Seahawks hired him. For whatever reason his 27-21 record with the Patriots in the late 90s was supposed to be evidence he couldn't coach at the NFL level, when in reality he never had a losing season in New England. It is easy to say the Carroll hiring didn't look bad in hindsight, but I don't understand why the hiring was unpopular. But then again, USC fans are always expecting the huge name. Sort of like how the Sark hiring was semi-unpopular when I think with USC's talent Sark can do well.

I'm probably still just overrating Matt Barkley's ability, but I thought that team was capable of great things.

The reason the Carroll hiring was so unpopular was that he was considered a "failed NFL coach" and he was replacing Paul Hackett who had been an NFL coach and was supposed to be this "great offensive mind". Instead, he lost and then tried to blame the area around the campus claiming he couldn't get any talented players. So it was a combination of another NFL coach and this one a failed NFL coach.

When he started out 2-6 in his 1st season, fans were screaming for his head. The smartest thing Garrett did in his whole tenure was not listen when everyone wanted him fired.

That team was capable of great things (I thought they were overrated at #1, though). But all of the negativity that started, literally when that ranking came out was already getting to the team and then when we lost to Stanford, everyone sort of panicked.

Yeah, once Stanford figured out that Cyrus Hobbi was not even close to Khaled Holmes, they just started sending 2 and 3 guys up the middle and Barkley barely had time to hand off to an RB, much less, drop back to pass.

I always have tried to avoid that area around USC. If it wasn't for the Museum, USC and Raider games (Maybe a Clippers game or two) I would have never gone around there. It's sceerey!! :fear::scared:

In the latest Beaver football news...I see Jack Del Rio's kid, who plays QB, will NOT have to sit out a year to be eligible to play this coming year after transfering from Bama. He gets ALL 4 years to play @ OSU.

The NCAA got something right for a change.

That's a good thing.

amazing. Too bad some programs had to suffer before the NCAA got their nuts in a vice over it.

now they seem to be a bit more realistic and reasonable.

Used to be, no doubt. My ex-wife was a student there in the mid-late 80's and wouldn't venture off campus unless I had come out to visit and even then, we wouldn't go very far.

One of the things that Pete Carroll did was start a lot of outreach in the area around the campus, so it's nicer and not nearly as bad anymore. My son and I go out there every year for at least 1 or 2 games and have never had or seen any issues.

Now, if you're rolling around the area in your UCLA gear, that might be a different story!!

Pete's a very good guy, can't see anyone having a bad word on his character. He did do a lot in the LA inner city areas.

Too bad the NCAA never saw the "light-n-way" and pummeled a great program and coaches program over a minor issue.

As much as I've hated seeing the team and university go through this, in a way, it's been a good thing. It shined a huge spotlight on the ridiculously illogical and unfair way the NCAA has been handling their business. Imo, what happened to USC is at least partially responsible for the fact that the NCAA seems to be starting to look at itself and trying find better ways to handle things.

Combine that with the botched investigation into Miami, the ham-handed way they dealt with Penn St., the criticisms around how they handled Cam Newton, tattoogate at tOSU and Northwestern getting approval for players to be unionized and the NCAA has no real choice but to start making changes.

If I was a betting man, this Del Rio Kid would be my long shot to be the dark horse in Pac 12 QB this year or the following year to come. Very good arm, reads defenses well, and has a great touch. Beaverville might have something going if they get some talent added around this kid...

Good read TF as always.

Kids a long ways away from Mannion talent, perhaps next year he will get a great chance at competing for his position @ State.
