Alabama just did that with a kid this offseason. Some schools pulled his offer from what I gathered. He went to immediate medical scholarship and didn't count against the limits. Considering the money involved, it seems odd to me that schools wouldn't honor it. Alabama/Saban was accused of only doing it for PR reasons, which is a bonus for sure although I don't particular care for the idea that people can't just do it out of the goodness of their heart.

I think that is the norm if a kid has given his verbal commit before or during his senior season. It may be a recruiting tool coaches use but it works for the kids as well.

Would have thought so, but apparently some schools pulled their offers after the kid got hurt. If we look at it from a pure PR standpoint seems like a bad PR move to me. That scholarship is a drop in the bucket for these schools, and it doesn't even count against the signing class numbers or the 85 limit.

I honestly don't know on that one. From what I've read and heard, schools will sometimes honor scholarships for players that they have offered even if they get hurt prior to actually showing up on campus. I don't think that they are required to, but many do anyway.

As 4d20 points out they also have the option of transferring if they disagree with the schools assessment. I think that the most logical option is make them 4 year schollies that can only be rescinded due to disciplinary/academic reasons.

If the kid suffers a career ending injury then I think he should keep his schollie, but it should not count against the schools scholarship numbers for upcoming seasons. I believe that's how it works with "medical hardship" but I don't know if it's mandatory that the player be given a medical hardship schollie. Maybe 4d20 or someone knows a little more about that?

That is correct. Medical Hardships do not count against your numbers. Texas has a kid coming in. They honored his scholarship. He counts against this years number, but next year it will not count.

If the player disagrees with the assessment, then the player can transfer to another school and play there.

Personally, I think the schools should be allowed to dump the players and give them a full scholarship even if there isn't an injury if they want.

This I do not agree with. Coaches are responsible for their evaluations. Kid and University make an agreement. Kid can not leave without facing penalties. I see no reason that the Coach should not have to take responsibility for his evaluation. There are mitigating factors like behavior and academics, but if a kid is making all the work outs and practices the coach should honor the scholarship.

They don't have to honor the scholarship now you realize right?

I do realize and think it is complete BS. Few conferences have already talked about making the tenure 4 yrs and not 1 yr. I believe the Big 10 has already done that and a few schools outside of it have adopted that policy. Either way that is just a tangent to my response.

UCLA has released starting LT Torian White from the team. Big loss for the Bruins. The O-line just got a lot thinner and will move several guys from the position they are best suited for. The offense struggled when White went down last year @ Utah.

^ Why the release?

He is under investigation for sexual assault. No charges have been filed. I am not privy to any details so I trust Mora's judgment. I hope justice is served and the truth comes out. Some things are more important than football.

I know from my experience that once a player starts their academic program at Stanford the university will find a way to either medical hardship, or out and out financial aid package them until they complete their degree. Happened to a couple of my fraternity brothers that played various sports and got injured. One blew up his pitching arm 2nd week of freshman year in an MC accident. They still paid for his full 4 years. Stanford often uses medical retirements to give walk-ons the vacated scholarship that counts against the limit.

But even with the shuffling and inexperience on the defensive line, new defensive coordinator Don Pellum will stick with the 3-4 base defense because of the depth and experience the Ducks have in their linebacker group, which returns three starters, and their defensive backs. Even though the Ducks have just one returning starter in the secondary (cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu), most of the DBs got some experience last season.

Quote comes off ESPN

After seeing the Beavs play that base 3-4 last year and get torched by running teams, I would expect to see teams continue to have run success against the Ducks this coming year.

NOT a fan of the base 3-4 D.

It seems like you could have a 4-3 package. Alliotti didnt learn after Stanford kept getting 3-4 yards at will.

Pellum is vowing to beef up the front line and LBers with more emphasis put on strength training. Fast is great, but when you cant stop a 3rd and 2 or 3.... Doesnt do too much good.

All of these front 7 guys are coming back heavier and stronger.

Basically a moronic statement. Little guy called Saban has done well in a 3-4. Hell, Charlie Strong has done well running a 3-3-5. Not the same but TCU runs 4-2-5. Nothing wrong with a 3-4 if you have the proper players and execution.

I am pretty happy with the 3-4 at Stanford, then again everyone eventually adapts even to an old scheme made new again.

Mamba is right though, if you can run one player 45 times on the alignment it speaks more to personal than the scheme.

My comment to directed toward the "not a fan of the 3-4 defense". Very rarely have I seen a bad scheme. I have seen bad players, bad personnel fit, and poor execution. Had he referenced something like Oregon is light in the ass at DT, than I could understand his comment.

Guess 1 moron attracts another one...

Yeah, duh....IF ya have the 3 hogs up front to play it. Bama? Lolz at their 5* players versus everyone elses 3-4* players.

We at OSU ONLY GET 3* at best, like I said I aint a fan of the base 3-4 D.

Genius. I do not care about OSU. I simply am commenting on the generalization that the 3-4 is poor against the run. Stanford does OK without 5 stars and Rutgers was #5 vs the run, but dont let that stop you from running your mouth
