We know that Malcolm Jenkins will be occupying one of those spots, and while we offered a boatload of cash to McCourty, we were unable to land him. The quality of free agent talent dropped off tremendously after him, and as we all saw, a lot of mediocre Safeties got paid a lot of money, ie Nate Allen.

Looking ahead at the draft, the quality of talent is pretty weak there as well. After Landon Collins, and I don't believe he's a good fit in this scheme, there aren't many quality prospects. Not to mention, no draft pick is quite a sure thing to begin with. Can we afford to go into the season relying on a rookie?

Based on comments by both Davis, and chip, the team would prefer interchangeable Safeties, and looking at Jenkins and McCourty, both converted corners, perhaps our safety is already on the roster. Nolan Carroll has the size at 6'1 205, and coverage skills to play beside Jenkins, while whoever we draft develops behind him. He played a dime linebacker role for us last year, especially when our depth at ilb was tested, and I think has the skills to convert to safety full time next season.

Perhaps it explains why we didn't jump in and overpay for a safety, when we already have someone capable of the position on the roster.

Totally possible that one of the extra CB's becomes the next S.

Makes total sense. I think Watkins, Reynolds, Wolf and Maragos will also compete.

Yep a cb on the team and in the draft will be our next S. There's really no other option unless they see a sleeper nobody else does.

Definitely Watkins has that potential, but not sure if he has the physicality to be a safety just yet.

Wolff really has fallen out of favour with the staff, and it's pretty disappointing because he showed some real potential as a rook. Has all the athleticism in the world too.

Reynolds didn't show much, despite a major lack of quality of Safeties around the league, not one team looked at him when we cut him.

Maragos is strictly a special teams guy.

The other unknown is Couplin, who with his freakish altheticism and size could be a dark horse candidate.

Yup, or the last option, and least likely, we trade for one.

I would recommend that we offer a 7th rd pick to Tampa for Dashon Goldson. He may wind up getting released, but I wouldn't risk losing him. Just me. Otherwise we "hope" we find a safety. In the draft there are several safeties that could develop, so Carroll could be the stop-gap candidate. Safeties that might interest Chip in the draft are, in no particular order:

IBRAHEIM CAMPBELL
JAQUISKI TARTT
CHRIS HACKETT
GEROLD HOLLIMAN
CODY PREWITT
ADRIAN AMOS
KURTIS DRUMMOND
DAMARIUS RANDALL

All of these have potential todevelop into good safeties. We just don't know. Landon collins is the only "blue chip" rated prospect, but is more of a run stopper, and not a good cover safety.

I think a trade is possible? We still have a few of Andy Reid's guys we can deal.. I love Curry, but I think his days being an Eagle are done. A few teams could use a DE. It's just a matter of having a partner who has what we need and what they need. Just my gut something will happen.

Goldson is done, and a poor scheme fit even if he wasn't done. I definitely think we draft someone, perhaps Eric Rowe from Utah, but like you mentioned, anyone we draft is far from a sure thing.

Definitely. The market for curry should have been higher last summer but without the production, the offers couldn't have been that good. With 9 sacks under his belt in a situational role last year, his value and suitors should have gone up. You could add Kendricks to the list of trade chips, and boykin as well, and after those three there really aren't many other realistic trade options. I'd include Evan Mathis, but what would he really bring back...

The other dilemma is with a league wide drought on Safeties, what team has the depth to move a quality player?

I'd be calling a team like the Bills. I'm not sure who they have or if they have anyone available for safety? I know they have a pretty good secondary. They replaced Byrd with no problem.

There is a lot of speculation about Watkins and or Carroll being moved to safety. Both are undersized for that position but both seem to have some of the required skills. Watkins obviously played there in college some.

In the eagles scheme, they are not looking for a thumper, but a cover guy, and interchangeable with Jenkins, so that's why they may not go for a guy like Landon Collins. Carroll and Watkins fit that bill, but, are they good enough?

Amos and Randall are two guys to keep an eye on - both fit what Davis is looking for best. Randall might go late 2nd to early 3rd, Amos might be available w/ our 3rd.

I don't think Carroll is physical enough to play safety, and Watkins might be the closest thing we have that's already on the roster. I read somewhere he was putting on extra muscle at the end of last season to handle the safety spot which is where I think he ultimately ends up.

We're going to have to take our favorite middle round safety and take our lumps with him and the guys we currently have. Bad year to need a safety.

It's been a bad year to need a safety for quite a few years now.

Yeah they're not making that many good ones. Dawkins is probably still better than anything we've put out there since the day Joe Banner fucked all that up.

Maybe Troy Polamalu for one year to help groom a rookie, like Adrian Amos, Jaquiski Tartt, or Ibraheim Campbell?
I think that one of these 3 will be the draftee this year.

I saw on I wanna say NFL Network (not sure) where teams were talking about P.J. Williams moving to safety. He's a physical guy but his long speed is in question. Might not be a bad idea adding someone like him who has some tackling and coverage abilities.

Caught this from Bob Sturm (who he is I have no idea :noidea:).

"I wonder if we are looking at a real impressive safety who has been playing corner in college."

I'm starting to wonder the same thing.
