rather keep him than buy him out or trade him in a strict salary dump.

4.5 for vinny looks a hell of a lot better than 4 for pouliot or 5.5 for bolland. (not that it's always a great idea to judge your success/failure based on other team's failures)

SOMEONE has to go though, right? If not Vinny then...Grossmann?

as much as i understand that vinny is the logical choice to go due to his salary and how he doesnt really fit into the teams plans given our centers, why don't they look to move another contract? move grossmann or maybe schenn? keep vinny? i mean, despite the fact that he doesn't really fit into the plans, he still put up 20 goals with a messed up back and playing 4th line minutes some nights. he obviously has some game. and if a center or two gets hurt, its always nice to have someone who can play center, like vinny?

just some thoughts..

keeping him really might not be the WORST thing you know?

Then move Grossman. It is becoming obvious teams aren't interested and WootPoker makes some valid points. Keep him around, complete the contract, and learn from the mistake.

it would be ideal to move someone, but they don't HAVE to. they're over the cap, but LTIR will bring them under for the season. it's not what you want to do, but they can do that.

Complete the contract? So we're going to keep Vinny here for four more freaking years? This is Hexy's team now, he should be ridding of guys like this - you don't want to give the impression that he thinks Vinny will turn it around - he needs to go one way or another, a great GM realizes the mistake that was made and cuts bait ASAP

Don't they have to carry Chris Pronger for the first day? They have to get under somehow

I believe that's true, but they've been in a similar spot the past couple of offseasons and made paper moves to get under. ie waiving schenn to the minors, but I don't think schenn is an option for that now.

I don't want them to have to complete the contract, I'm with you there, but I don't think now is the time to move him, based on what the market has told us so far. Don't force the move now. Go in to the season with him on the roster (assuming paper moves can get you under, they can at least waive rosehill which gets them pretty close), hopefully he's actually healthy and contributes (20 goals is nothing to scoff at for an unhealthy player) and come the trade deadline someone is looking to add a veteran center for a playoff run. then you can pillage some desperate team for some picks or prospects instead of having to retrain a bunch of salary or be penalized from a buyout.

I'm with Awaz don't force things wait for a good opportunity to move him. In the meantime play him at center and move Schenn to the wing. If his back is better he may end up surprising us. I'd then move either Read or Schenn to G's wing. That lineup is still good enough to make the playoffs....

for kicks, this is what I would do w/ who they have right now..

schenn.giroux.voracek
umberger.couturier.simmonds
akeson.lecavalier.read
PEB.laughton.raffl
rinaldo

timonen.coburn
streit.macdonald
grossmann.schenn
Schultz

Mason
Emery

forward lines listed by ice time, not necessarily role. the 3rd line isn't a shutdown line. I would look to the 4th line for that role.

This Cobie. Once again, the bottom line it is clear that nobody right now wants Vinny. So you either eat the contract by dumping him outright as you suggested, keep him for the length of the contract as I suggested, or as awaz suggested move him at the time somebody wants him. Otherwise we reset and we are right back where we started.

Man this Pronger situation is a tough scenario. I am sure Hextall and Holmgren will do the right thing to complete yet another bad situation.

great article. lays it out nicely. thanks cobie.

I imagine they'd want to do this:

OPTION 1: Build the injured player into their opening-day roster and have that roster fit as close to the upper limit as possible without exceeding it, then place the player on LTIR.

So let's say they are 500k under the cap, and they put him on LTIR, then they'd have 4.441 in cap space, you subtract the 4.941 by the .500 and you end up with 4.441, so I think what the Flyers would want to do is just BARELY go under the cap, maybe around the 200k range and then when they put him on LTIR it would give them a little bit more space

Should be interesting what they do

It's hitting me today. Draft and July 1st are gone and I'm really starting to miss hockey.
