On Thursday, the Lions hosted Appalachian State's Sam Martin, a unique prospect because of his ability to kick and punt.

Martin was named a first-team All-American as a punter last season, averaging 45.9 yards per attempt (40.8 yards net) and having 25 of his 60 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

While he only attempted 10 field goals, Martin did serve as the Mountaineers kickoff specialist. He averaged 63.1 yards on kickoffs as a senior, netting touchbacks on 45 of his 71 attempts.

We passed on Chase Thomas and Ryan Swope for a guy that probably wont make the team

The Lions always try to get cute and outsmart the room in the late rounds.

Lions have a glaring hole a P and the guy can kickoff and serve as a backup Kicker. Versatility is a plus. I wouldnt have gone P yet, but the guy can make our team better.

We better do something big in the 6th round. We are slipping. I can deal with a second DE. My guess is they don't think Young and Lewis will both be on the team or maybe moving Lewis to OLB. I don't understand using a 5th on a punter.

I'm not thrilled with the pick, I would have rather had Swope, but I can't see this guy not making the team. We don't currently have a starting punter, so he's got to be the favorite as of now...

There is no doubt in my mind that the Lions are drafting for need this year. Every pick has filled a need.

Why wouldn't it matter? Still lots of talent left.

I can't believe everyone is freaking out over a punter at the end of the 5th round... We needed a punter, the best one was already taken, so we jumped on the next one...

HES NOT EVEN THE BEST FUCKING PUNTER. QUIN SHARP? BRAD WING? Come on

That may depend on how you define best. He is definitely the most versatile. He can boot the kickoff out of the endzone (he did it in college) and he can nail a fg (did it in college) and his avg. punt was decent.

it will be better if they take one of the above mentioned names with this nxt pick, we can just pretend that they took the punter in the 6th

Maybe by default. Could bring in anyone who did not get drafted and have just as good a chance. There were several other punters ahead of this guy on many peoples list.

At Appalachian State, Martin was a four-year starter at punter. Here's a rundown of his numbers:

2012: 60 punts, 45.9 avg. (long of 68)
2011: 54 punts, 40.7 avg. (long of 69)
2010: 60 punts, 39.2 avg. (long of 63)
2009: 52 punts, 40.0 avg. (long of 74)

i dont really know if thats good or not for punters. Is it?

Well, I'll give them this....We will be punting a lot. Warford was a great pick, but we're still in big trouble at tackle, I fear.
