It seems the front office has a new approach under Trent Baalke and company (obviously, right?)...

He seems to have a plan or model that he is following without sway. Locking up the core of compliments at fair prices. Extending the stars to long term contracts. Adding peices (free agents) to upgrade or compliment at low risk, and or lower prices. And adding solid and effective peices in the draft to fit the scheme. Every move seems to have a purpose and good calculation...

Considering what we've seen from Trent Baalke over the last year, how would you access his performance?

I would access his performance through Mike Sando; 49ers.com; Barrows, Maiocco and Branch; and this board.

I wish I had more direct access, but I have to settle for those.

Isn't this the goal of every front office? Whether they succeed or not is a different question

That should be the approach from every front office, but is it? Over paying, reaching, forcing a bad fit are all things we see every day in the NFL. Some front offices have long term plans, some have short. Some gamble, some are conservative...

yep, whether they suceed or not is the question?

there are a lot of factors but the key is the draft.

So it's tough to assess his performance this offseason - his moves look good, will be outstanding if Peyton signs- but have to see how the season plays out.
Last year Baalke won Exec of the year, so what more can you say?
The year before he had Singletary- so some of his moves I like, and the ones to appease Sing (ie Mays) not so good. He should have had the balls to say no, but. It was year 1 for him and we are human.

Umm he gets an A+. Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, maybe Peyton Manning just on offense. Re-signed eveyone on our defense from last year and landed Perrish Cox who is an upgrade over Spencer.

You seem to have an ability to objectively and intelligently assess what he is doing, now just wait for the outcome and your opinion will be as good as anyone's, at least or especially the opinions of our beat writers.

A+

You forgot to add: Drafting players that are supremely talented but raw. Recent examples are Bowman, Aldon, AD, Kap, Culliver. It appears to be working... this team is loaded with size and speed.

This may be a bit off.....but it seems like an extension of McCloughan's strategy, its just being executed well instead of terribly. McCloughan also drafted a lot of projects (both in terms of position switches and plain unrefined talent).....both GMs prefer big strong athletic types over skill players.

yep, the key is drafting so making the right choices fuel your GM success. McCloughan MIGHT'VE had the same thinking (i'd think the majority do), but his picks didn't pan out enough, or coaching didn't bring it out fast enough.

Harbaugh deserves a lot of credit but the team wasn't devoid of talent. it was building up and just needed a little more at QB, he brought it out. at least he brought out enough of it from Alex Smith.
