An unknown and never discussed thing is that the first slaves sent to the colonies were not African. They were Scots. In 1650 Oliver Cromwell defeat the Scottish at the battle of Dunbar. He marched the losers naked in winter 100 miles and sold them to Ships' Captains for as much as L30 each. One hundred and fifty of them were on a ship called the Unity that sailed to Boston and only 72 made it. The healthiest were sold to the Saugus Iron Works and the rest were sold to the Berwick Lumber Yard.

Most were given their freedom after seven years by the King of England and with it fifty acres of land at what was the frontier at the time. For the men at the Iron Works that was Way out in what today is Peabody, MA. Those men and their families were given the responsibility of fight the native tribes if they desired to start heading to Boston.

Hence the saying, "Good Lord willing and the Creek don't rise up." Somewhere the "up" got lopped off.
And how'd the Sots feel when ol' Abe emancipated them two hundred years later?

It's fairly unknown and not talked about for a reason. It was limited and isolated, and completely irrelevant when discussing the broader issue of "unjustified slavery". While the justification for enslaving the Scots was poor (punishment of a war), African's were simply harvested into slavery.

Hmm...In my mind a brook is smaller than a creek, which is smaller than a river.

But yes, creek.
As in "If the good lords willing and the Creek don't rise".

Which refers to the Indian tribe rebelling, not flood waters.
You are probably right about Brooks. What you all a creek would be a small river here.

Generally, the difference is size: you can step over a brook, jump over a creek, wade across a stream, and swim across a river.

I would have put the creek larger than a stream...

Makes me recall my preteen years and setting ramps at the edge of a brook and playing Evil Knievel.

They were sold into slavery by their tribal leaders in Africa.
That's not what roots taught me. In modern times we'd call it receiving and distributing stolen property. (And engaging in slavery of course).

Roots had a bit of a self pity point of view for Alex Haley.

History tends to forget that the Jews were the first tribe of people to be completely enslaved and were slaves for more than 5000 years.

History also tends to forget that every conquered people or country were either executed or enslaved by the conqueror.

Africans took advantage of the fact that the Dutch. yes the Dutch, were willing to pay for conquered tribes and remove them from Africa. The strongest tribes then set out looking for weaker tribes and killed the strongest men and then sold the boys and women. Then the English and french followed suit and started bringing them to America.

The big difference was that the Europeans stopped slavery in their countries and still wanted to make money selling them in the New World. It took about another hundred years before a civil war ended it and another hundred before they were no longer considered to be less because of slavery.

And here we are, 60 years later still arguing about slavery as if we all had first hand knowledge of it.

Hey asshole - follow the rules and respond to messages properly instead of playing games where you think somehow not adding to someone else's stats actually moves a needle.

You got caught by an administrator doing what you thought was fun. It's a violation of a major rule of the HOOP. You could have been banned permanently but you only got two weeks. Doing what you did is considered Identity Theft. No one knew who did it. No one knew until you came back and started screaming at me. If you had said nothing, no one would know it was you.

If you're going to spend eternity trying to get back at me for your actions, be my guest. You got caught. Simple as that. I'm sorry that you couldn't participate for two weeks. I hope that you can get beyond it. If not, you'll probably find yourself being ignored because others in here have been pretty nice about asking you to grow up and get over it.

I'm sorry that you can't accept my apology.
