Jack Nicklaus was the best of his day. He could not compete on these courses today and he admits it. In his best year a par3 was never longer than 140 yards except at the masters and the distance was about 160. Jack could hit the ball about 300 yards on a really good day. Players today, including the bottom feeders can hit 2 iron 300 yards. It's truly like comparing oranges to tangerines. Same family, different fruit.

Agree with that. He made courses busier and dildos with 20 caps pretend to line up like they're Tiger. It's still a net positive.

Hopefully if he does get hot and young people start getting interested again then they're a bit smarter about how they expand the industry. It's the toughest game there is to play decent and the only way you're going to be able to get to a proficient level is with coaching and training. All these stupid commercials saying you're going to hit it like a pro if you just buy a couple of thousand dollars worth of equipment doesn't help out much either.

I stayed on the 18th green at Augusta last year on Sunday after the final group teed off on 1. It's crazy how thick the crowd would get as Tiger was getting within a hole or two. Then the crowd would disappear after he was gone. This was with him nowhere near contention.

You have to pick a spot and wait for him to come by and hope he passes near you. It's the only way. I got a picture of him and Dimarco walking down the fairway during a Ryder Cup practice round several years ago, with my wife in the foreground. You can tell it's him but they were at least 40 yards away.

Of course not. He's 79. But that's silly. When did he "admit" that ? The distances they hit it now are due to the equipment and ball changes. This is fairly common knowledge. Nicklaus would do fine if he was in his prime right now. He'd still be Nicklaus.

I do think many courses brought it upon themselves jacking rates up so high. I don't feel bad if their model failed them.

It's too easy to market to the majority of golfers. Hell with 10-20 yards further on every new driver, we should be hitting 440 by now.

It's a great game. I love it. My wife works for the PGA Tour. My dad played for Kentucky. It's in my blood. I love the greats, reading and watching the old videos. I also love what it is today where it's more regimwnt, process and guys dedicating their entire lives to competing. I think it only gets better from here.

It's impossible to compare. If these guys tried to play their distances with steel shaft drivers and a clubhead that isn't the size of a toaster using old balls they'd all be having wrist or elbow surgery by the end of the year.

They went crazy overbuilding, too. Golf is an expensive, time-consuming sport .. not to mention difficult to become good enough to enjoy yourself playing it. Many activities you can suck at and still enjoy. Golf isn't really like that. The "Tiger boom" was always doomed to be somewhat limited based upon those factors.

Tiger the golfer, especially in his prime, was like nothing else. His talent may never be equalled.

Tiger the person, is a whole different story. If he didn't move the needle and make the money he did for the tour, he coulda been ostracized years ago for some of his antics.

I hate to break it to you, but he's hardly the first star athlete to fuck around on his wife. Magic Johnson is still pretty beloved and he claims that while he never came close to Wilt Chamerlain, because he cheated on his wife with over 2,000 women. I personally know one professional athlete and without spreading any rumors via privaleged information, I can tell you theres a bunch of guys who haven't been publicized or demonized but are just as bad.

I wouldn't blame tiger for being great. He's a once in a generation talent. It's how so many people went after the quick buck instead of putting some thought into how to have it grow organically that fucked things up. There's a lot of public courses in really bad shape right now, and with the cost of real estate rising it makes it worse every year.

Simply not true. The training these players go through today is exponentially better. Nobody in Jack’s era had the swing speeds these players have.
