Indiana, riding the momentum of Friday night’s dramatic ninth-inning comeback against Valparaiso, ripped apart the Austin Peay staff, racking up 14 hits against six pitchers.

The first inning didn’t match the eventual rout, especially when IU starter Joey DeNato gave up a three-run homer to cleanup hitter Reed Harper. It appeared the early onslaught would continue, but left fielder Casey Smith leaned over the low bullpen wall and hauled in P.J. Torres’ deep fly to end the inning.

“Honestly, when I saw that ball go off the bat, I was already processing in my mind, ‘Oh my God, we’re down five,’ ” Smith said. “I was shocked he caught it.”

IU clawed back against starter Casey Delgado by batting around in the second inning and scoring four runs in a two-out rally to take a 5-3 lead, highlighted by a two-run homer from first baseman Sam Travis that glanced off the scoreboard in deep left-center.

The Governors added a run in the bottom of the second, then were held in check by DeNato, who didn’t allow a hit in his final four innings and finished with nine strikeouts over six innings.

Austin Peay hitters credited DeNato for moving away from his fastball after the first inning to develop his breaking ball and changeup. “You’ve got to tip your cap,” said third baseman Jordan Hankins.

The Hoosiers scored 10 runs over the middle three innings to extend their lead to 15-4, aided by back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Austin Peay relievers Don Whitson and Jared Carkuff in the sixth inning.
