The Last Movie You Watched (no spoilers)

Honestly, I'm glad I didn't see Downsizing but it took a couple of things.

1) Trailer that seemed to show all major plot points
2) The wife actually thought 'Suburbicon' and 'Downsizing' were the same movie.

Unfortunately Suburbicon also seemed quite awful from what little I saw.

There really wasn’t a coherent plot in Downsizing to be spoiled in the trailers.

But the celeb “cameos” were pretty much all ruined in the trailers. I quote “cameos” because I don’t think they were intended to be cameos. They were just REALLY small roles. For example, Jason Sedekas’ entire part in the film was, I think, shown in the trailers. He is literally on screen for less than 2 minutes but the trailers made it seem like he was a serious 2nd lead. The only legit “2nd” leads in the movie would be Christoph Waltz (who, predictably, did a commendable job) or Hong Chau (who was horrible!).

Ant Man and The Wasp... meh, it was ok. It's funny and your typical marvel movie so it is done well. I felt that the movie wanted me to just accept certain things like...

The ghost girl knowing and understanding quantum theory/mechanics and starting up the lab and doing everything as if she is some phenom on quantum physics when all the movie gave us was that she was taken in by a quantum physicist at age 10 or something... as if that is all it takes. Just move in with someone and you are instantly able to understand fields of science that very few in the entire world understand. Oh okay, I'm calling bullshit on that.

there are more, but I honestly don't want to get started. I will say that the 'love' or 'romance' between Ant Man and the Wasp doesn't feel organic as in the first where it seemed to grow over the course of the movie. Maybe it is just me, but in the sequel it felt more forced.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids: 3/5 stars. The first hour and a half kinda felt like a red herring in hindsight, but the final 30 minutes including the bad ass final shootout scene was awesome. Redman and Newman were both excellent (I particularly liked Redman dipping a lip of tobacco), but I liked The Sting (3.5/5 stars) better with them.

This is one of the most fucking iconic (and bad ass) shots in all of film history.

Saw Bladerunner 2049. Better the 2nd time

I gave it 3/5 stars on first watch. I feel like I would definitely enjoy it more on a rewatch- much like I bumped Interstellar from 3.5/5 stars to 4/5 stars on a rewatch. I'll try to do that this weekend.

By the way, did you know that Villeneuve (the director) wanted to cast David Bowie in Jared Leto's role in that movie, but couldn't (obviously) after Bowie passed away in January 2016? He would have been excellent. Leto was ok/decent from what I remember seeing it in October.

It was a good movie, but maybe not as fun as the first one. I'm still not crazy about Scott Lang's X-Con friends. They are just too corny.

Belko Experiment

It was alright, but I liked The Circle better, which was the same general concept. The Circle did the entire game through dialogue and even threw in some sci-fi at the end. Even the Cube handled this general genre better. This movie doesn’t need a budget or SFX. The gore in this movie was not done very well, so it tended to take me out of moment.

Hotel Transylvania 3. My 8 year old laughed his ass off. 18 year old went to and he thought it had some funny parts.

For a kids movie I would give it 3 1/2 stars.

Saw The Legacy of the Whitetail Deer Hunter

There are a lot of movies about divorced dads. Thats literally this whole movie and it becomes a predictable slog. Masculinity and Pride are destructive. Check. You'll enjoy the Squid and the Whale or even GTAV more.

I did actually enjoy the last act of the movie and the final shot is appropriate. There just isnt humor or joy in the script for it to be worth it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: 3/5 stars. The first half was awful. I was thinking it might be MCU's worst output, if not one of the worser movies I've seen in a while.

But the second half picked up, save for a way too long battle scene at the climax. The Kurt Russell being a villain thing wasn't even the most predictable thing that's happened to me today, and Yondu (Michael Rooker) becoming a loving father figure was actually pretty heartwarming. His send off was nice. I bet Stallone is still spending the money he made from his 3 minutes of screen time; bastard.

I gave the first Guardians of the Galaxy 3/5 stars as well, but I liked this one more. The biggest issue I have with them is that the humor (and there's so much of it (that's attempted)) is fucking terrible. I begrudgingly chuckled once. It's like only 8 year olds would find the jokes in these movies to be funny.

The MCU is becoming way too predictable. They're entertaining enough because there's a lot of great actors/actresses in the universe and the writing/dialogue is still very good, but the plots are just terrible. Constant jokes ---> 80s references ---> the world is going to be killed/ended ---> stale, one-dimensional villain ---> explosions, fighting sequences ---> happy ending, no one of note dies.

I'll let you all know what I think of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Sorry To Bother You this afternoon. It's a satire with a bit of sci-fi about racial code switching & ruling/business class vs lower/working class battles. Ignore the 95% RT score... "Get Out" it is not. The 69% it has from the audiences so far is closer to the mark. But it wasn't terrible. In fact some of it, including the lead performances, was very good. Too much silliness that badly missed the mark to highly recommend it, though. 3/5 stars

How it Ends

I have seen complaints about the fact they don’t tell you what is happening. I am actually OK with that. That is where the characters are, and we wouldn’t be in the same emotional place as them if we knew.

What I have a problem with is the fact that the whole country seems to fall into “Mad Max” territory the very next day. I guess they are trying to say that people are at their root animals who will do anything to get ahead without some authority, and OK, I can buy that to a degree. I just don’t buy that that would happen so fast, simply with a lack of news.

Anyway, not so bad outside of that gripe (and the “Shane” situation at the end is not well developed at all).

Sorry To Bother You (2018)

This is a movie where I have to separate my politics from the movies. It seems like a typical peons vs the rich capitalist movie at first, but gradually gets more absurd and kinda creative. The absurdity what I liked most about it. I liked the lead actor Lakeith Standield, who plays Cassius Green("Cash is green"). Tessa Thompson has a nice face but a man body. Some good gags, funny lines and exchanges.
