The Los Angeles Lakers signed free agent Wayne Ellington, the team announced Monday evening.
Ellington has had a busy offseason, the shooting guard was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the New York Knicks in the Tyson Chandler and Jose Calderon trade, and then they turned around and dealt from New York to the Sacramento Kings. The Kings waived him for financial reasons.
It was a bid of an odd move since they are stacked at SG with Kobe Bryant, rookie Jordan Clarkson, Nick Young and Xavier Henry. The move could mean Young and Henry will see most of their action at small forward, along with Wesley Johnson. Or they could go with a small-ball lineup with three guards. New coach Byron Scott definitely has a lot of options available to him.
Regardless, Ellington can shoot the ball, he has played five NBA seasons and is a career 38.6% shooter on 3-pointers. Last season, he made a career-high 42.4% of his treys. He had his best season in 2012-2013 when he averaged 7.9 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game in 78 games (in 21.3 minutes per game) with the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers.
