And this is a potential dilemma Jimmy has come up short in camp this year but week 1 pre-season he shined albeit he shined late in the second quarter when the first team defenders were mostly sitting. But still we all see potential. In a recent interview with a retired Patriots TB12 was asked if wins another SB this year he would not retire unless he felt there was a drop off, due soon but not likely this year. This being said if the Pats tag Jimmy he is owed 24 Mil I think, money that could be spent to keep a solid secondary in place aka Butler. This spawns the question would you rather maintain a starting top 10 CB or a bench role quality back up QB? Keep in mind the QB class next year is suppose to be good. What are viable options here?

Do we, try to extend Jimmy this season, toss the tag on him next season, let him walk, or do the unthinkable?

Great questions I have no answer for.
I defer to the man in the hoodie.

(I'd like to keep Jimmy if at all possible)

I just noticed your signature, not sure it's all your fault but you'll damn sure be the one flipping the bill to fix it.

It's all very interesting how it will shake out. Trying to extend him now is the logical thing from a business perspective for the Pats. But it's probably not the logical thing for him...two years of the FT will be >$50MM and based on recent contracts he can probably command at least $40MM guaranteed on the open market, so I think they'll have a hard time finding a middle ground on an extension. Some other things to ponder...the cap is projected to go up another $10MM or so per year each of the next three years, they're way under the cap for next year ATM, and next year is also the first time Brady's contract will carry a fairly onerous cap number, so they can at the very least create more room by redoing his deal again if they want. Point being, they likely could afford to pay both of them without damaging the rest of the roster too badly if they wanted to, but I don't think BB will want to based on his prior comments about the ideal scenario being the backup QB on a rookie contract.

Hard to imagine them doing the unthinkable...then again, if there was ever a coach that would do it, it's Belichick.

So you feel in the end Jimmy will likely be gone? If so do you fell that is money better spent on someone like Butler?

I consider Jimmy leaving the most likely scenario, yes, barring any wink-and-nod agreements we don't know about, of course. Generally speaking, yes, I'd rather have Butler for the next few years who will be on the field virtually every down on defense versus a backup that you hope never has to play. OTOH, if you're going to give Butler a deal similar to what they gave Gilmore, then you kinda start to run into the same issue with too much money tied up in one position again (though less extreme, obviously). And even though finding good corners is really hard, it's still less hard than finding good QB's. So I can see the logic in wanting to keep Jimmy if they can find a deal that works for both sides.

It is possible they could find a way to keep both, but I do consider it unlikely

Their assessment of Brissett's progress will likely be a key piece of the puzzle in all this, as well.

Yeah and Jacoby did not look good the other night although I do fell he has potential, he is a smart kid, with a good arm.

Tag and Trade.

Restock at other positions like DE and LB pull another nobody out of thin air to groom at QB to be Brissets replacement.

Yeah Jimmy G was not a nobody if that is the implication. But again with a heavy QB class next year the Pats could get someone, and if a team takes him they would have to give up their round one pick I believe.

Will the Pats keep Brisset on their roster? They can't practice squad him, can they?

Only if he cleared waivers first.

And with the dearth of even competent QB play around the league, his performance in the Houston game alone is likely enough to ensure that wouldn't happen.

I don't think that BB will keep JG. Bill's a gambler, but $24M for a back up QB is nutz. I think Brady will extend his contract for 5 years at $10M per 100% guaranteed. That way he can retire if he thinks it's time and if not, there will be a $100M bonus at the end of year 5. Or give him a $100M signing bonus and extend him for 10 years at $15M per year. The bonus gets paid out over 10 years at $10M per and the contract is dead the year he retires. It would cost the Pats $25M every year Brady plays.

Like someone else said, sign and trade JG. Might be able to get a 1st Round pick and something else. I'd trade him to Cleveland right now for LOT Joe Thomas.

Draft a QB next year to learn under Brady and back up Brissett for a year.

Not a nobody but drafted higher (2nd r) than most expected coming out of Eastern Illinois.
Jacoby B same kinda deal. Not a nobody but it surprised many when Bill took him in the third.
Surprising for both that Bill drafted them as much as for when he took them.
I would not be surprised if Bill tagged and traded Jimmy then drafted another that shocked everybody with hidden talent.

No Tony Easons.

The year to trade Jimmy was last off-season. His value will not be higher. We won't see him play like we did last yr. unless there is an injury. He was great in those 2 first games last yr, and might have lead this team to 4-0 as a starter. I have no clue what happens to him. This all depends on Tommy Boy. I still think TB is done after this yr regardless. DO we even know what Jimmy G wants to do? Does he want to wait for TB to finish up, or be dealt for a chance to start? Maybe he is cool with waiting, IDK. The window to trade Jimmy to Clev is over. Kazier is their QB of the future.

Problem there is he'd hit the cap at $35MM per...you can only prorate a bonus over 5 years on the cap.

It's "supposed to be" but it's not. Nothing but projects next year......
