well here is my assessment of gruden
first of here is my philosophy on how much time a HC should get . those of you who are long term posters on SportsHoopla oe even espn know this but the newer guys may not
i think a coach should get 3 years to get his program in place year one is seeing what you have , year 2 is addressing needs , year 3 it should jell .
this isnt the end all be all but in most cases this should be it
what did gruden walk into ? first he inherited a dysfunctional team with a huge qb issue that was old and lacking in starting talent and quality NFL depth . he had no real GM and he was stuck with coaches not of his choosing . add to it a meddling owner and you get the picture
year one was a predictable disaster with none of the qbs taking the job and a defense that was plain awful . special teams werea historical failure . his 1st draft netted him moses , and grant and long
so far in year 2 we have done better . our draft was productive but injuries have appeared en mass
he made up his mind at qb and went with KC . he has 3 young o/lineman who have played well vs the pass but have struggled vs the run . young jamison clam crowder has been a revelation at wr . scherf has proven to be a good pick at RG putting moses in was a great coaching move
injuries have killed this team we have at least let our depth get some experience , and rookies like keyshone jarret have answered the bell . thompson has played very well and jones is almost there at RB
i think gruden has learned to manage the team better and has let his assistants do their jobs . barry appears to be a miss after starting out well
i think this team needs more talent and that talent needs to come from the draft . free agency gets you about half of what you sign as being productive
this year is no different . paea, golston have been iffy . pot roast has been ok RJF has been good in his role but all have disappointments . hopkins and way have bee outstanding pick ups but hatcher is way overpaid as is roberts
the defense has been a major disappointment . the d/line hasnt played like it should , murphy is a BU , kerrigan has disapeared , safety is still a mess and ilb play makes you want to puke
at this point i feel gruden should stay providing he can get to 6 or so wins . if we end up 4-12 or less then you have to let him go . but that would set the franchise back 2-3 years again but that would be understood
SM is seeing what he needs . he will see what the coaching staff is doing and what players he needs . i expect he will obtain more draft picks and get rid of the dead weight in year 2
gruden could be in that purge but i believe he will get year 3 and we will get 6 wins
