what makes a "true" bench player?

One that isn't a platoon player. Their game time is dependent on a regular needing a day off or a regular being injured. They don't have an automatic spot in the lineup when a lefty or a righty is pitching for the opposition.

I wonder if the game is transitioning away from that. I read an article earlier today about how Gabe Kapler used over 140 different lineups last year, and we've already seen Woody's tendency to PH and platoon.

I've made no secret of my belief in the consistent lineup, and platooning is the antithesis of that.

I wonder if that will change when we have in place a solid positioned team where platooning is not needed. Once the reserves come up things should begin to settle down and players will start to fall in place requiring only the true bench player as we have always known.

Trying to think if there are other moves besides Jung which will need a vet being moved off. They. just might let him close out in AAA but guessing no if he plays well

That's what I was getting at... I wonder if teams are working towards building their rosters based around platooning, as the inclusion of statistics becomes a bigger part of the game.

Normally I'd say that he'd see better pitches hitting in front of Heim, but he's such an easy out that pretty much any pitch will do the trick.

I can see the Rangers utilizing one pure platoon duo but with a 4 man bench including catcher it does not bode well unless the guys left out are talented in a variety of positions

I like to keep a 4th OF as a defensive specialist and speed burner. Could be the last man off the bench usually

The difference i think is some teams have a lineup full of guys good enough to play everyday and several do not. We do not, currently. Our World Series teams did and some after those two years as well.

I don't think we will hear anything until he starts baseball workouts again. I think the hope was to get him back by sometime late in August or beginning of September.

Pretty good article that highlights Coach Eckers approach. Good metrics on the swing

FWIW if a person does not buy into the coaches approach there is a problem and likely not with the coach. Might be some coddling
