I'm sure this has been brought up before but figured might as well discuss again. Pittsburgh successfully ran a fake spike yesterday against the Cowboys. To me, this is a BS play and should not be allowed. Aside from being a busch league move, it's a great way for defensive players to get killed. It's lame and I think they should do away with it. Thoughts?

Keep it, gotta play until the end.

However, PIT shouldn't be upset if in another game this year they do a real spike and their OL get's blown up or a WR gets planted on his ass.

Sad thing is that when that happens and the center gets blown backwards it will probably be called a personal foul.

This. Do it all you like, but your o-line better be ready to get blown up.

How would a defensive player get killed? Only two people knew what was happening, the o-line did even move.

I would say keep it. If you are going to ban that then have to ban all those "unique plays". They have been a part of the game forever and teams just have to be ready for the fact that they might be ran. They add excitement to the game of football.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Defenses should fire the line on every snap. I get annoyed that kneeldowns or spikes usually get no kind of jump off the line from defenses. If you're down 20 with 30 seconds left that's one thing, but if it's a 1 possession game, anything is still possible and should be played aggressively til the whistle.

I hope we see more fake spikes. These guys are getting played millions, they should be on top of their game.

Banning it seems like a wuss move on the level of banning rushing on a kneel down. "You play to win the game." Rules passed for "player safety" are ruining the game.

I could see a rule on fake kneelings, but I saw no problem with what happened yesterday and actually thought it was a pretty savvy play. Glad Big D pulled it out in the end though.

Isn't spiking the ball the absolute most intentional grounding you can have??? I don't think it's fair to give the offense the benefit of being able to spike the ball to save time and then also give the offense the opportunity to use that advantage to deceive the defense.

Just my two cents...

I would agree that it only benefits the offense to stop the clock if didn't also cost them yards and a down.

And whether it deceives the defense is up to that defense.

It doesn't cost the offense any yards. What are you talking about? It's treated as an incomplete pass. They should make the QB take the snap...run outside the tackle box and then throw the ball away (past the line of scrimmage). Instead, they allow intentional grounding (which is BS in my opinion).

Just to add, it's a lot easier said than done for the D to go balls to wall on these plays. Now you're talking about a split second decision as to whether or not you're sacking a guy in play or taking a crippling roughing the passe/late hit penalty.
