I have posited this in response to another thread but I think it deserves its own conversation. It seems that some posters seem to think that because everyone deflates balls then the Patriots shouldn't be punished.

If we take that line of reasoning to its logical extreme, should we never punish a player who fails a drug test because plenty of other players fail as well and not everyone is caught?

What about offensive holding? Should that flag simply never be thrown again as a ref can find it on practically every play if he wanted to. Should offensive linemen simply be allowed to hold on every play even though it is clearly against the rules?

Penalties result from breaking rules. If you break a rule then you should be punished right?

So should equipment for NFL players not be regulated? Pretty sure didn't the NFL just pay close to a billion dollars because equipment didn't protect players well enough from concussions?

The "everyone does it" defense is one of the more asinine things I've ever heard. If you don't think so, try using it the next time you get pulled over for speeding. I'll bet anything it doesn't get you out of a ticket.

So essentially equipment to you means nothing in this game. I guess next time you go play in an actual game of football maybe you should play without a helmet or play with one from the 1950's and see why equipment has to meet a certain criteria.

And on those shoulder pads he could put spikes on them or maybe some device that will shock anyone that touches it. Perfectly fine right?

I have no clue what this has to do with my post? You say equipment doesn't matter so I tell you to wear the stuff from the 1950's and go out and have a 300 lb. guy hit you at full speed and tell me that equipment doesn't matter. Or let's just go with the football since that is the piece at question here of say your team loses by 1 point and after the game the team is found to have used balls that were not within regulation. Are you telling me you are not going to come on here and scream about how your team was cheated out of the game? Come on Rock I know you won't answer honestly but we both know that the true answer if the shoe was on the other foot that you would be just as much up in arms about a team having an advantage over you.

and to answer your question. "why not?" Because there are rules against it. If you break the rules, then you shouldn't be surprised when you get punished.

So you needed that equipment to make it through playing football right? I'm pretty sure the way that college football and the pros is played these days that without an actual regulation helmet most would be dead within a few months of playing.
