From mlbtraderumors:
"The Rangers have reached agreement on a minor league deal with righty Colby Lewis, tweets Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The deal includes a Spring Training invite.
Lewis had been a nice MLB comeback story before missing 2013 to have hip surgery. Now 34, Lewis posted a cumulative 3.93 ERA in eighty starts over 2010-12, including 8.1 K/9 against just 2.4 BB/9.
His new deal calls for him to make $2MM if he ends up in the bigs, and contains up to $4MM in additional incentives, according to Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com (via Twitter). "
This news made my day, as Colby is my favorite Ranger. Whether he is able to pitch again or resemble the 2011 playoff warrior remains to be seen. But I think it's a smart move by JD to give him the minor-league deal and possibly provide some more competition for that 5th rotation spot. The Rangers haven't had a ton of success with starters on make-good deals (Harden, Webb), but I do like Colby's chances better than theirs. Plus with Murphy now gone, JD had to retain the remaining over-the-top nice guy on the team.
