The full schedule will be released in the 18th. This is my favorite part of the off season because the schedule is the single most definite thing about the pending season we get in the off season.
What I’m expecting:
- the Broncos won’t open at home in 2019.
- the Broncos won’t host MNF, but they’ll be featured. They likely will host a SNF game and of course every team plays a TNF game.
- the Broncos will still be featured in prime time at least 3 times, maybe 4.
What I’m hoping for:
- home team for TNF.
- bye week no earlier than week 8.
- week 1 @ Kansas City
- at least 3 home games by week 5
My rationale for these is the home team generally has a pronounced advantage on TNF. I realize the Broncos biggest win last year came as a road team on TNF and the year prior they outplayed a woeful Colts team on the road on TNF. Still I prefer to be at home for that short week.
The early bye weeks suck. I wish the league would take a serious look at the scheduling and make some changes to how they schedule bye weeks and subsequent games. I wouldn’t be too much harder (and a fuck load more equitable) if they adjusted scheduling so that teams coming off bye weeks only play other teams coming off bye weeks. I still get frustrated and likely will never forgive the league for scheduling the Broncos in 2009 to play teams coming off bye weeks in 4 straight games.
I’d like to see the Broncos get a traditionally tough game out of the way early. Plus in week 1 all bets are off. I’d give the Broncos a much better shot of going into Arrowhead and swiping a win in week 1 than at a later date in the season. The Chiefs off season has been a disaster but they still have the draft and remain the favorites to win the division. An early season upset in a place you can usually pencil in a loss would be a great way to start for this new staff/team.
While I want the Broncos to start on the road, I still want a good dose of home games front loaded. Preferably against the Raiders and Chargers. The Broncos typically have a stellar record at home early in the season. I’d like to see the league make our biggest rivals face that environment early. Something like this:
Week 1: @ Chiefs
Week 2: vs Chargers
Week 4: vs Raiders
Week 7: vs Chargers
Week 10: vs Chiefs (Broncos coming off bye)
Week 17: @ Raiders
I seriously doubt the league is going to take my preference into consideration but this seams reasonable. Especially after the league scheduled the Broncos in 2016 for prime time games against their AFC west rivals all on the road!
While you still have to play the games little nuances in the schedule can really break in your favor. Or make things tough. Teams will never complain about the schedule and they shouldn’t. But this stuff is fair game to the fans.
I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s schedule even more than seeing who the team drafts.
