I don't really think he's a developmental S, he's a developmental CB, probably a starter at safety. After Ward the quality at the Safety position drops a bunch so this guy probably wouldn't have been around in the 2nd round. I honestly didn't want Roby too many issues off the field for my liking.

A lot of people felt like he would go in the top to middle of round two. A lot of people also thought he shouldn't go until late two or somewhere in the 3rd depending on the scheme.

I think Washington would've been a possibility. Oakland, St. Louis, Detroit, and Dallas all could've been high on him, too, in my opinion.

He ran a 4.47 with a 38" vert at his pro day, didn't run at the combine bc of a foot injury.

it's not as if stress fractures heal super quick - if it kept him from running at the combine then it probably factored in at his pro day. He may run even faster for all we know... He does look pretty quick on tape.

I give it a B-. I like it better than the Eric Reid pick last year. Ward is a playmaker. We just got ourselves a poorman's version of Earl Thomas. I would have preferred Nix or Rashede Hangeman based on the way the card was dealt to us.

Both are still available and the Niners have a lot of picks. I like Tuitt more than Rashede Hangeman but that's me.

no need to address the S position in the first... we could've address 4 spots before talking about S... but its a S turn CB? idk how to respond to that, for a first rd selection...

Hageman would've been much better as well as 3-4 WRs, Roberson, Martin from USC etc...

I think its a little premature just because Ward looks like a solid player.

The pick is a little underwhelming, especially because Roby was there, but did you really expect Baalke to make the obvious pick? That doesnt seem to be his MO.

Baalke has made two questionable late first rd selections, the first/last one really flopped....

its premature but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again.... we really needed help at other areas but went this route however word is he'll look at CB? but who knows

Reid, Brock, Culliver has been pretty good for a late-3rd round pick. He went out and got Rogers, Whitner, and I believe he either extended Brown or gave him the opportunity to start. That's a pretty good track record.

no no, i wasn't referring to him as a developmental S... I was talking about a Buchanneon, Vereen, Loston, Baily... guys who could've been taken later and let them develope without relying their immediate impact on the field for our current window.

Being taken first, for me, you better make an impact(pending on most positions) and after JUST signing a bad pickup in bethea, what's the point?

I feel we could've address 4 positions before talking S that early....

I agree, but he isn't going to play Safety, at least not at first or unless he shows he can't play Corner. I'm not doing cart wheels about the pick but I really like the player but he doesn't fit well from a needs point of view if he can't transition to Corner. I figured the team would take a CB and he'd play Nickle with Culliver and Brock starting. It was always about insurance to me. I am thinking that Smith is going to miss significant time next year so the pass rush might be a huge concern.

Bad job by the front office. They were thinking about the Future and not now. U don't do that when when u have other needs. If we won the super bowl then its ok.

Not to mention Morris and Cooper in the later rounds. Morris is one of our gunners on ST as a 7th (I think?) rd pick and Cooper was a 7th rd pick that was picked up by KC

tomorrow has to be a big day for us. front office needs to understand we can't take 11 picks. I might be wrong but we can only keep like 5-6 picks. We need to make moves tomorrow.

right now, we as fans are to going to see the draft selections and development of Baalke/Harbaugh draft selections.... instead of inheriting most of our best players.

AND yes they have drafted winners too...

I didn't expect any player they would draft at 30 to start for this team, Ward won't likely going to be the Nickle CB. It's all depth and guys that will get on the field in the first two rounds but not starters on this team any way. I'm guessing we'll see more movement in the 2nd round.

I agree the 30th pick won't be a starter but we had a chance to grab a starter talent. Instead we drafted a starter in a year or 2. Don't like it.

No one had this pick. They pulled a AJ on us again.

For like 15 years now the 49ers have had an odd history of getting players with a ridiculous ability and history of blocking kicks. That continues again. Ward blocked four punts in his college career. Just an odd occurrence that this spans over several different coaching staffs and front offices.

i get what your saying buts thats awful for a team contending for the now... they could've drafted a developmental S later or have two drafts to get one or sign one....

WR, CB, C, TE(had more beef than S), DT, NT, DE, OLB...i don't get it

Smart GMs draft for three years out, not next year. If Ward projects in the way the Cards used the Honey Badger, I don't have a problem with the pick. We need a nickel corner, and we need to develop a starting S. Honestly, in today's NFL, I like the idea of Reid at more of a SS and Ward at FS.
