Wouldn't walking home in DC a this point be more dangerous than biking in a hurricane?

I'm going to wait a couple more hours (and hope I can get a bike) since the wind is supposed to drop a good 5-10 mph. The dangerous part is flying debris/trees falling over. Since nobody is on the road, I can ride right in the middle of it and as the wind keeps dying down, I don't have to worry about stuff flying into my face/head.

We'll see. I just want to lie in my bed right now. I had a dinner of a trail mix, pretzels, and fruit snacks from the vending machine. Hahaha.

I lost power here for about 4 hours. I feel lucky because from most statements it sounded like if you lost power it would be out for a couple days because it was too windy to repair lines. I "heated" up a can of soup by submerging it in hot tap water. And I had a French press coffee from hot water. Mmmm. It worked though.
When my power came back the sump pump went on for 9 minutes straight, no water inside though. So I am feeling fortunate.

I'm not 100% sure, but a rollerblading unicorn can't be a good sign...

That reminds me of a line in an old Bill Murray movie called "Quick Change". Its been so long since I have seen it I am not sure if it should or not.

Oh and I leased the ORM© to a poster on a KHL message board. I figured since I cant use it....

so the ship bounty that was used in the movies Mutiny on the Bounty and Pirates of the Caribbean sank 90 miles off the coast of the Carolinas (I think I have the correct) 2 crew dead.

what I have to ask is what were they doing out there knowing Sandy was coming? I assume that is a path that Sandy would have affected?

I heard some talking head blathering on about how ships stand a better chance at open sea then they do moored during a major storm like this. I think the crew would disagree at this point, though.

Either way, you would think that they'd have gotten further away than that.

My cousins checked in, the ones who went to the high grounds lost power and still don't have it back. My cousin and his two sons who stayed at home and drank beer and watched "Miracle" and "Slap Shot" on Kent Island were just fine. Back yard is flooded and one gutter came down, but they are just fine. Didn't even lose power.

Once the roads get a little better (and they are allowed in) they will head to the Ocean City house and survey the damage there. They are not expecting it to be good.

I'd say it depends on the type of ship. A relative of mine crews a Naval vessel at the Norfolk Naval base in Virginia. His wife told me that many of our Navy ships put out to sea last weekend prior to the hurricane reaching the base. They do in fact stand a better chance out at sea, than being moored in a port receiving storm surge.

A ship like the bounty though, obviously is not a modern vessel. I can't imagine a ship that draws its primary power from the wind would do better out at sea during a hurricane.

The coastal towns here in CT got rocked. I still have work today... Nothing happened in my town of South Windsor though. But some houses in Milford supposedly just came off the foundation and out into the ocean. Crazy.

There was bit of flooding in my area, Bull Run was up probably 5-10 feet. I only passed through one area on my way to work this morning with no power (commute is about 20 miles). All in all, we really didn't see too much out of the storm.

there were about 85 nuclear facilities in the path

yah i know

I was wondering if anyone had an update on that one that was the oldest facility (Oyster Creek) in America located in New Jersey that they shutdown and put on ALERT due to elevated water intake levels

checked and they say its stable right now ... but this is how Fukushima started :noidea:

Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education

The biggest problem, as I see it right now, is the Oyster Creek plant
Oyster Creek is the same design design, but even older, than Fukushima Daiichi unit 1
It’s in a refueling outage, that means that all the nuclear fuel is not in the nuclear reactor, but it’s over in the spent fuel pool
There’s no backup power for the spent fuel pools
If Oyster Creek were to lose its offsite power, and frankly that’s really likely, there would be no way cool that nuclear fuel that’s in the fuel pool until they get the power reestablished
The most important lesson we can take out of Fukushima Daiichi and climate change, and especially with Hurricane Sandy, is that we can’t expect to cool these fueling pools

Watching CNN and saw videos of nurses manually ventilating the infants. Incredible men and women. Sounds like they got everyone out. NYC/NJ are in need of a lot of prayer...this clean up will take quite some time.
