Either way, I wish the Eovaldi decision would be done and over with by noon tomorrow.
I like Eovaldi but he turns 35 in Feb. I don’t feel confident he will duplicate what he did in the fall of 23. If you bring him back then you add him to the rest of the aging starters with injuries.
Your talking about hinging your hopes on a 36yr old Degrom coming back from TJ, A 30 yr old oft injured Mahle. Since 2022 its either his shoulder or elbow. Inconsistent 33 yr old John Gray who may be better in the bullpen.
Bradford has shown upside so I would rather sign several decent relievers and get the bullpen solidified and see if we can get Rocker,Acker, Teodo or Leiter ready to start. At some point we need to get some of these young pitchers with upside a chance to start.
Leiter turns 25 in April. I would think he should be ready by now. He did pitch better toward the end of the year. If he cant get it done then give an opportunity to another young pitcher. I also like M. Bratt and Z.Tiger as young pitchers with upside

From Jamey Newberg:

  • According to Jon Morosi (MLB Network), the Braves “would like to bring [left-handed reliever A.J. Minter] back, and the Cubs and Rangers are among the clubs with interest.” Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi (SportsNet) add the Blue Jays to that mix.

Minter is from Tyler, Texas.

Also from Newberg:

Among the 11 players Jonathan Mayo (MLB Pipeline) highlights as “players to watch” in the Rule 5 Draft are Rangers LHP Bryan Magdaleno and Tigers C Liam Hicks, the latter of whom Detroit picked up from Texas in the Kelly trade in July.

From Ken Rosenthal:

The Texas Rangers likely cannot spend big until they gain clarity on their future local media revenue, but that isn’t stopping them from at least getting in the mix for some of the better free-agent starting pitchers.

Re-signing Eovaldi remains the Rangers’ top priority, according to sources briefed on their plans. But the team also is in contact with Fried and others, keeping its options open just in case it suddenly gains payroll flexibility.

Of course, it’s unlikely such a boost would come before Fried makes his decision. The Rangers are the only team without certainty about their local TV rights for next season. They no longer are partnering with the Diamond Sports Group and are trying to start their own regional sports network.

On January 11, 2024, Minter again avoided the salary arbitration process, agreeing to a one-year, $6.22 million deal.[30][31] Minter was placed on the injured list in late May, and revealed that he had left hip impingement the following month.[32] Although he was activated in early July,[33] Minter returned to the injured list in mid-August with the same issue,[34][35] and planned to undergo surgery.[36] He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on August 20, effectively ending his season.[37] Overall, Minter finished with a 5–4 record and 2.62 ERA with 35 strikeouts across 39 games.

Do you know why he missed the last few weeks of the season?
Do you know why he missed the last few weeks of the season?
I just saw where he had micro fracture surgery and a lesion removed from his femur back in August. I didn’t know this. Its ashame because every time I have seen him pitch he has rendered good results.
Having some minor hip issues myself from playing sports in high school and other friends who have had hip surgery it seems like surgery ends with mix results.
So it’s a hard pass for me on Minter.
I guess he would get a one year deal on the low side with incentives from someone

On the other hand, when Dane Dunnjng had hip surgery, it really helped him to improve.

As long as I am mentioning Dunning, I will say again that I would have no problems with him as our fifth starter in next year's rotation.

The Rule 5 draft is tomorrow. I think these guys have a chance of being selected.

Crim
Magdaleno
Acker
Stephan
Garcia

All of them won't be taken, but it is still a mistake that those guys are even available to be taken. They all belong on the 40-man roster ahead of some of the guys we have there. They all should be available to help out the team next season.

Some information from MLB about this afternoon's draft lottery.

All non-playoff teams are entered into a lottery for the top six picks. This year, 16 of those 18 teams are eligible for the lottery. Here they are, listed in order of the odds of them getting the No. 1 pick, with their 2024 winning percentage in parentheses.

22.45 percent -- Rockies (.377)
22.45 -- Marlins (.383)
17.96 -- Angels (.389)
10.20 -- Nationals (.438)
7.48 -- Blue Jays (.457)
5.31 -- Pirates (.469)
3.67 -- Reds (.475)
2.45 -- Rangers (.481)
1.90 -- Giants (.494)
1.50 -- Rays (.494)
1.22 -- Red Sox (.500)
1.09 -- Twins (.506)
0.82 -- Cardinals (.512)
0.68 -- Cubs (.512)
0.53 -- Mariners (.525)
0.27 -- D-backs (.549)
0.0 -- White Sox (.253 – ineligible for lottery pick)
0.0 -- A’s (.426 – ineligible for lottery pick)

As a team that received a lottery pick in the 2024 Draft and is a “payor club” -- a team that gives rather than receives revenue sharing dollars -- the White Sox are not eligible for this year’s lottery. The A’s are a “payee club,” but landed lottery picks in 2023 and '24, and payees cannot receive a lottery pick three years in a row. They can pick no earlier than 10th and 11th in the 2025 Draft as a result.

After the first round, the lottery results won't affect picks Nos. 1-18, which will be in reverse order of winning percentage.

I ran a draft lottery simulation just now. I ran it five times. The Rangers picked 12th three times and 9th twice.

but then wouldn't we need a full-time 1Bman? i know some think Duran but i don't think he's a fulltime option
Myself, I would stay in house for 1B. The main reason to trade Lowe would be to use that money elsewhere, so I wouldn't look to acquire a 1B who would probably cost just as much. I highly doubt the Rangers would agree with me though.

Crim and Ortiz are basically the only real 1B inhouse options, but your point about free agents is well taken

Well, Foscue and Huff could be considered as well. Dustin Harris, too
