I noticed the difference in plate appearances as well. His better OBP took care of a significant portion of that difference, in a way. His total number of singles and walks combined were almost the same those two years.

On the A’s, pitching coach Scott Emerson refers to catcher Sean Murphy as the “translator” for Oakland’s inexperienced pitching staff. “He is really good at breaking down the data and applying it to the pitchers and their game plans and then being able to make in-game adjustments rather than following a script,” says Emerson. Why is that important? Emerson points out that if pitchers shake off what the catcher calls on the PitchCom device once or twice they can get down under six seconds on the pitch clock and have to rush the thought process and the delivery on the pitch.
