If the Rangers were intent on pursuing one of the two, would you rather sign Cole or Strasburg, if SS could be had for a few million less per year? Say, $4 million less per year.

Gallo has excellent speed and a great arm, both of which would be wasted at 1st. And I think he'd be much less likely to be injured in RF.

Honestly, I have Guzman at AAA unless he shows in ST he's ready to be an everyday hitter of ML pitching.
I am not as worried about Condor at the plate like most because compared to our starting catcher, Mathis, at least Condor can hit about .200 consistently.
once the opposing pitcher got passed the 1st 5 or 6 in the batting order for the Rangers he could almost relax and let on his speed etc. Mathis, Condor, whomever we had at 3rd and for the most part Mazara we scared no one at the plate. and for most the season Odor was useless. with Choo, Elvis, Calhoun, Gallo(before the injury), Santana and Solak we were okay from 1 to 5 and then you might as well go get popcorn and a beer for the rest

and no IKF has not played any 1st base

I want Cole just because he is younger, seems less prone to injury and he was very consistent. It almost seems like he has really learned how to pitch during his time with the Astros.

Strasburg was out of this world in the playoffs. I’d get him for that alone.

Yankees have met with both Cole and Strasburg and told them they want both no matter what it cost

From Evan Grant:

About the plan, it appears to be more clear what it won’t be than what it now is.

It won’t be Cole Hamels. He went to Atlanta for $18 million Wednesday (yeah, the market does seem to be, um, robust once again).

It won’t be Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasburg. Both are going to be $30 million pitchers. If you are going to target one of them, that’s your primary focus. You don’t go to $30 million guys as fallback options.

According to two major league sources, the Rangers are more likely to drop down a tier in the pecking order of free agent pitching to go after more depth. It means bypassing the likes of Madison Bumgarner, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dallas Keuchel, all of whom are likely to exceed $15 million per year in salary.

The next level is populated by the likes of serviceable Rick Porcello, Tanner Roark and Wade Miley and tantalizing, but injury-prone guys such as Michael Piñeda, Julio Teheran, Alex Wood and recently non-tendered Taijuan Walker. The $20 million the club was prepared to spend on Wheeler could be spread to two of those guys.

There is also the world of trades to explore again, though that becomes complicated and costly in other manners, too. Boston might be looking to offload the huge contracts of David Price, Chris Sale or Nathan Eovaldi. They are each exceptional talents. They have each also spent at least three months on the IL over the last two seasons.

They must also consider if any of those options is even worth it. If not, maybe it’s time to talk to teams about Mike Minor or Lance Lynn and continue the churn towards “long-term sustainability.” That’s another way of saying “not gonna happen any time soon.”

The last thing general manager Jon Daniels said about the free agent market was at the GM meetings nearly a month ago.

“Our goal is to get better, period,” Daniels said at the time. “There are a couple of spots more [available] than others. We have signed [top free agents] before and, at some point, I have to suspect we will again.”

He also said the Rangers had “an idea of where we’d like to go.”

Indeed. That vision was laser-focused.

And now it’s on to Plan B.

Just in case anyone is wondering, Strasburg has a career ERA of
3.14 and a career WHIP of 1.068 against the American League.

Strasburg was out of this world in the playoffs. I’d get him for that alone.
Last 2 years Cole outpitched Strasburg. Plus 4 of the last 5 years Cole has pitched over 200 innings, Strasburg once. If I am going to spend money I want the guy out there every 5th day. And like I said he seems to just have really found himself. Not that he was bad before.

Teheran culd be interesting but I am not sure who is agent it. I know Porcello's is Boras so that may scare me off since he had been making over 20 mill a year.

I'm OK with that too. Cost is a question as you stated.
