Dabo Swinney was mediocre in his first few seasons. Then he started recruiting top classes.

It always comes down to elite recruiting.
I dont think a single team has ever won a title in the modern BCS/CFP era without at least one top 3 class on its roster.

It doesnt guarantee wins, but nobody has ever won a damn thing without those elite classes.
This list is mostly coaches who have potential of getting TOP 3 classes, and maybe even multiple top 3 classes.

And that is the one single common element of title teams.

Probably should research that first. Clemson has won 2 titles in the last three years and has never had a top 3 class on its roster. They recruit well, but definitely not that high, at least according to the "experts" (who, keep in mind, gave stars to a fictional recruit based exclusively on a fake offer from Bama). I'd say they're idiots and that good coaches have a better eye for players than them, as well as give Dabo and the staff credit for picking players who are a good fit for the team and then developing them into 5 star athletes.

For 2016:

Class of 2013: #15
Class of 2014: #16
Class of 2015: #9
Class of 2016: #11

For 2018:

Class of 2015: #9
Class of 2016: #11
Class of 2017: #16
Class of 2018: #7

Ranking the 10 coaches most likely to join CFB's 'natty club'

10 Mario Cristobal - Oregon
9 Ed Orgeron - LSU
8 Brian Kelly - Notre Dame
7 Dan Mullen - Florida
6 Jim Harbaugh - Michigan
5 James Franklin - Penn State
4 Ryan Day - Ohio State
3 Tom Herman - Texas
2 Lincoln Riley - Oklahoma
1 Kirby Smart - Georgia

I think the top two might have a chance this year, if they can get past Bama & Clemson. Numbers 3, 4, & 7 could break through in the near future. I'm not sold on the rest of the lot.
