At least he hasn't lost to Kansas.

Dabo Swinney was mediocre in his first few seasons. Then he started recruiting top classes.

It always comes down to elite recruiting.
I dont think a single team has ever won a title in the modern BCS/CFP era without at least one top 3 class on its roster.

It doesnt guarantee wins, but nobody has ever won a damn thing without those elite classes.
This list is mostly coaches who have potential of getting TOP 3 classes, and maybe even multiple top 3 classes.

And that is the one single common element of title teams.

Now, the FSU win for Herman and Houston was a good one.

Pelini actually coached a bowl game on New Years Day, and won against Georgia.

herman coached teams that played on December 31 and january 1.

Ironically, both herman and pelini beat Georgia in a january 1 bowl game.
