Big name college football star with a skill-set that doesn't translate well to the pro game.... Have we ever drafted anyone with that description?

Not sure what we'll do with him, so I'm torn between the near certainty that he'll suck, and the happiness that at least Mike Brown did something.

So we signed another safety who can't cover?

That makes sense.....

As Joe Reedy pointed out, we now have 3 players from last year's 49ers defense that ranked 24th in the league.

LOL! And three more members of that defense were former Bengals -Ahamad Brooks, Takeo Spikes and Justin Smith. Who-Dey!

And don't forget Whitner, who was a near-bengal. It's a defensive exchange program.

The Browns and Yorks -- These guys know how to run a franchise.

How awful of a game will it be in week 3? I think both teams are looking for some (Andrew) Luck..... Did you see what I did there?

My guess is Mays will convert to a WLB, he is too big to be a Safety, but not big enough to be an OLB in a 3-4 defense.

Lawson is a very good LB, he has good coverage skills and is very good against the run. His weakness according to sack numbers was his pass rush, though he wasn't sent very often in the 49ers bend don't break defense. On a percentage basis he was pretty good at disrupting the passer when given the opportunity.

Nate Clements can not play off of the WR, he needs to be physical and aggressive to be successful, this means you need a good pass rush for Clements to play to his strengths or he will get burned.

I'd say Mays will be a situational guy. We'll see what Zimmer can do with him.

Zimmer has started Roy Williams at saftey for two different teams. i think he'll work with Mays as a saftey with a similar skillset. I don't forsee a move to LBer

If that's the case then I would say it was a bad move on the Bengals part, I don't think Mays has the skills or instincts to be a Safety, I think his only hope of being a successful NFL player is a LB in a 4-3 scheme.

Good Luck on the season guys.

Mays has speed to burn, but his instincts are what holds him back. Zimmer is a great teacher, but I don't know if he can help him enough to ever be a quality starter. He will probably be used situationally as a pass rusher and safety in multiple-DB sets.

As Bengals fans we're all too familiar with bad moves on the Bengals' part........

He's better than our backups. We improved depth. It's a drop in the bucket.

It's out of character for the Bengals to do something to improve depth, so we question it.

He'd probably be the best running back on the team too.

He's better than Tom Nelson, a Broke down Gibril Wilson, or the other kids we have behind Crocker and Nelson.....I will take it...Groom him to replace Crocker who I would compare him to...

Roy Williams was a 5 time pro bowler with Zimmer. Jesus if he can't do something with an athlete like Mays then we are having some severe problems. Crocker is the worst starting SS in the league. Lets see what Mays has after we are 1-6.

For those touting the "upgrade" in depth, it better not have been better than a 5th round pick.
