He's 25 years old.

As for him holding up, who knows?

Forgot about the Angels, they will probably be in on it as well. They need another SP.

I expect the Cubs to make a move

They should make a move with their lineup, its something awful. Adding Tanaka would be pretty stupid for that team. Hes going to cost a lot and they will suck either way.

After checking multiple baseball info web sites, there seems to be a consensus as to the teams in the early running for his services. Those being, the Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Braves, Rangers and Diamondbacks. At the same time, each questions the Cubs ability to land him, not due to lack of $$, but due to a lack of interest in him playing for a perennial loser.

As such, my question on the reamining teams is, which team both has the most $$ to spend, and has recently shown its desire to continue to spend it?

Hmm....

There isn't really a single answer to your first question, is there? Seems that the Dodgers, M's and Rangers have all been on recent spending sprees (could be that there are other teams I'm missing who have also recently increased payroll significantly). As far as your second question goes, I'm not sure how informative a team having recently "shown a desire to continue to spend" really is. For example, I could see how some teams might find it a good PR to publicly express more interest in Tanaka than they really have, while others might think it advantageous to try and acquire him in a more private manner.

I must say that, after reading a good bit of your posts over the last few weeks, that you may be both too smart and logical for this board. And, I mean that only in the most positive ways. And, while I like your contributions, you kind of make it hard for me to make any off the cuff quips, and to post anything that is not both serious and well thought out.

So, thanks for making things harder for me..........:yahoo::lol::suds:

The Yankees are the Yankees and will always spend big. They are well known world wide as their brand is so large.

They are reportedly going to throw out the budget for Tanaka, they need him more than the Dodgers. Who could be hurting themselves as if they give Tanaka a super huge deal, then Kershaw is going to want a even bigger deal from them. And you already have Grienke making $26 mil per year. So Kershaw will probably ask for $30 mil per year.

I expect the Mariners to be in the discussion but in the end they won't get it done.

Add to that the fact that not only is Brian Cashman going all out to win everything this upcoming season, he is also quite possibly doing it to save his job. I just can't see it going any other way, and I am by no means a Yankees fan.

I will say, though, for some insane reason I can see the Angels shocking the hell out of everyone and being the proverbial fly in the ointment.

Here's an article about Tanaka and potential suitors:

Richard Justice: Masahiro Tanaka may yield big returns on investment | MLB.com: News

While I definitely expect the NYY, LAD, and perhaps other teams to make a strong effort to get Tanaka, here is an excerpt that I think is encouraging for Rangers fans: "That adjustment period is why plenty of people believe the Rangers have a huge advantage. Since Tanaka and Darvish are workout partners, Tanaka could have an immediate comfort level in Texas. Still, the Yankees remain the consensus favorites to land him because he's so critical to their off-season."

Exactly

This is how bad things are for the Yankees in regards to their pitching and farm system: it’s actually a lower risk for them to give Tanaka 10 years and 200 million dollars than it is for them to not sign him and go with what they have and will have for the next five years.

I'm not saying they WILL give him 10/200, just that this is a must have player for the Yankees if there ever was one. They're the most desperate for him and they have the most money, it’s a no-brainer.

A "no-brainer" that they go all in on trying to get him or a "no-brainer" that they will end up the team that gets him? I definitely agree with the former; the latter is far less than a foregone conclusion.

Both.

They will blow up the market to get this guy.

Good point; had Choo not turned them down, I would have agreed with the latter as well. It does leave an opening for doubt, doesn't it?

I think so. I also think that not re-signing Cano leaves room for doubt.

Also think that some might underestimate just what an advantage already having Darvish is for the Rangers. Coming from Japan to the US is a very big adjustment. Having a teammate who has already made that adjustment and who is also a personal friend could be very appealing to Tanaka.

it will be interesting to hear all the yankee fans who whined about Canos deal spin them blowing up the market and way overbidding for this guy who has never pitched one pitch in the majors.
