I think the reality is though that...

The further you hit your drive - the closer you will be to the hole.
The closer you are to the hole - the closer your approach shot will be to the hole.
The closer your approach shot is to the hole - the shorter your putts will be.
The shorter your putts are - the more likely you are to make them.

All mostly true. Though if you don't hit it straight, the longer you hit it, the more offline and likely to be in trouble you will be. So that is not necessarily true in all cases either.

But I raised the example of a bogey golfer intentionally and I've read your posts here. So I am not talking about you or golfers of your skill level. Golf is a target game and for guys who struggle to break 90, lack of distance is not the primary reason nor even close to their biggest flaw imo.

Was supposed to have a chipping lesson today, but we're rained out.

I'm really struggling with the chips around the green, most are either fat or thin. Yesterday I shot a 44 and i bet my chipping cost me at least 5 strokes.

I'm at the point where I'm dreading a short chip.

I've been working a lot on my chipping for over a year now, realizing it was the weakest part of my game and when you're getting older, you're not going to be making hay with your long game.

I stand close to the ball, choke up on the club some, tilt it toward the toe, shaft slightly forward, body turn swing.

I've been much more consistent in getting the ball safely on the green, and now rarely skull it over, which made me crazy. The hardest part is taking the new technique from the chipping green to the course where it counts, but that's true of most swing changes.

After a week of really bad chipping, I went down to the putting green yesterday and dropped 15 balls, landed all but 2 where I wanted, would have done more but cold beer was waiting for me in the club house. I think I'm decelerating before I get to the ball....I think.

But there has to be more to it.

Yup, and then get flippy with the hands because something tells you the stroke isn't strong enough. That's my fault.

I just got back from my practice session at the PGA Superstore. I love the setup there with the Trackman technology that provides immediate and accurate feedback. 220 is as good as it gets with the driver.. and more like 200 on average. That's about what I thought. All my distance numbers were roughly what I thought they were for everything. $30 for an hour I think is a pretty good deal. But they also have an annual pass that allows you 1 practice session a day for $300 so I think I'm going to get that.

What kind of instruction/feedback do you get?

Distance, direction, ball spin rate, ball speed, clubhead approach angle.. and a bunch of other stuff I didn't pay much attention to. I didn't pay much attention some of that either actually.. mostly just the distance and direction. There's a screen you hit into and a keypad and mouse you use to tell it what club you're hitting and the desired distance. The screen shows your landing area and where all of your shots wound up until it clears when you select another club and distance to hit.

You can also use it to play a simulated round at an actual course. They have 75 golf course pre-loaded and you can play a round by yourself or with others as a game. I'll probably just use the practice feature.

I think simulators give you some of those values too, but they're $40/hour around here. Sounds like you're getting a good deal.

Yea I was surprised. It's not much more than I'd pay to hit the same number of balls at a range. The man told me the couple of other places in the area that have the simulators charge $40-$50 p/h. This place just opened a few months ago. They'll probably raise their prices once more people are aware of them. Used to be a Dick's sporting goods.
