Believe the Parise and Suter deals are the fourth and fifth largest ever, behind Ovechkin, Crosby and Kovalchuk.

that just doesn't seem right.

Probably the result of a $6 million jump in the cap ceiling from the previous season. It certainly changes the landscape in a hurry.

Am I the only one who detests these long contracts? Teams keep doing them and they constantly get burned by them but every athlete still wants them. Is there some reason for extended contracts that I'm clearly missing?

I would say guaranteed money/security is high on the list for athletes (if you sign a short term contract and suffer a career-ending injury, once that contract is over, so ends the money train).

The contracts are paid out as follows: $12mil, 12, 11, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 6, 2, 1, 1

I expect no opposition from the league on these contracts, but those last three years certainly help bring the cap hit down...

$94m over the 'effective' 10 years of the deal.

I would like the next CBA to allow for zero-variance in salary from one season to the next.

I see this and I believe that the readers of TSN have a higher hockey IQ then most, I am still a little pissed about the Red Wings not landing these two. But I do feel a little better after the chart.

Depends on the team acquiring Weber. If it's a perennial cup contender Weber will sign an extension because not only will that team continue ot contend for the cup, but offer him a HUGE contract.
