No problem with their decision (don't know why anyone would have a problem with it, but apparently some do) but I think Suter is overpaid. I think Parise is overpaid as well, but not relative to free agency. But it's a lot of money, and a lot of years, for someone who's been playing beside Webber his whole career.
Wanted Pens to get Parise, but they didn't, no biggie, at least he didn't go to a rival. Thought we could get both, but looking at those salaries, I'm glad we didn't.
I agree that they aren't true contenders yet. I think they are a year or 2 away from being a very good team though. They can round out the roster quite cheaply with some talented young players and their ELCs. Some may also be used as trade bait at the deadline. I think Granlund will be on the team this year and maybe Coyle as well.
Examining this from the Penguins angle: did they really lose? Sure, they came away without either player, but they did save themselves about $200m over the next 12-13 years. I certainly wanted Parise, because it would be comforting to know that we have a top-line forward locked up to play with Crosby for the rest of his career, but there will be more chances.
For the Wild, I think this was more of a marketing decision than a hockey decision. Suter's a very consistent d-man, but I think they paid that much for the name recognition more than his body of work. Parise obviously will sell tickets. They had the space for this kind of move and I don't blame them.
