The Star Tribune in Minneapolis got a hold of the qualifications and requirements packet for their bid to host Super Bowl LII and it's more than just stadium seating capacity, places to host parties, parking & events and hotel accommodations for teams, NFL execs and fans. The document is 153 pages long.

Here's the link to the Star Tribune website where they've embedded the document:

NFL had a long, pricey and secret Super Bowl wish list for Minneapolis | Star Tribune

This should give you some insight into whether Seattle is capable of hosting a Super Bowl anytime soon.

What does Minneapolis have that Seattle doesn't have? Their new stadium is supposed to be an open building with no roof (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not sure), so that would have been the only advantage I can think of.

I've only been to Seattle once and its already one of my favorite places. Outside of the weather in February there isn't any other reason to stop Seattle from hosting a SB. If NY can do it in February then so can Seattle.

Oh they'll ban open air stadiums shortly. The golden boy Luck or something will make the Super Bowl on the back of a cupcake division, schedule, and AFC conference (like hmmm, the last 2 years and this one?), get annihilated by one of the MANY great Ds in the NFC (Saints, Panthers, Hawks, 9ers, Cards, etc.) and turn it over 3-4+ times and coincidentally it'll be raining or snowing. Then all the nut hugging Luck fans (about 99% of the media) will cry that the weather affected Luck and it's ridiculous that the NFL does not play it at Indy whenever Luck is in, and Goodell will have to change it back.

My keen senses and savvy intellect tell me you may be fed up with the media's love affair with Luck and their free-pass explanations for his pedestrian numbers.

Super Bowl week in New Jersey could have been a lot worse than it was (and was initially forecast to be) weather-wise and if it had been, I think that would have put an end to outdoor Super Bowls in cold weather cities right then and there. As it stands, though, I think the door is still open for at least one more.

Every time I think about Minnesota's new stadium, I keep thinking it's an outdoor stadium, but it isn't. I just looked it up and its ceiling/roof is made of clear ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, which I guess is some sort of plastic. Reading up on the stadium, it sounds like the owners wanted an outdoor stadium, but the public wouldn't help fund one and a retractable roof was too expensive. I guess it'll be the first this material has been used for a stadium roof in this country.

Just reading some of the NFL requirements.

NFL requirements for Super Bowl's host city leaked - CBSSports.com

A few interesting items that caught our eye while combing through the 153-page document.

  • NFL controls "100 percent of the revenues from all ticket sales" including "ticket sales in all suites" and the NFL "must have exclusive access to all club seats"
  • NFL requires a "climate-controlled domed stadium" if average temperature for that region falls below 50 degrees
  • "Postgame removal of the field shall be of no cost to the NFL" unless it wants to remove parts of the field "for the sale of licensed products"
  • "Exclusive, cost-free use of 35,000" parking spaces for gameday parking
  • The NFL has the "option to install ATMs that accept NFL preferred credit/debit cards in exchange for cash" and to cover up other ATMs.
  • Team hotels must agree to televise the NFL Network for one year leading up to the Super Bowl
  • If cellular service is too weak at the team hotels (based on the "sole discretion of the NFL"), the Host Committee must install boosters and/or cell antennas.
  • "Local enforcement officers will be provided to the NFL" for anti-counterfeit enforcement teams "at not cost to the NFL."
  • Full tax exemption from city, state and local taxes for tickets sold to the Super Bowl (and also the NFL Experience, the NFL Honors show and "other NFL Official Events").
  • "The NFL shall receive priority over all other ice and snow removal projects, except those that directly threaten life or public safety."
  • Tons of advertising for the NFL Experience: 1,500 ratings points on TV stations, 20 pages of color ads in local newspapers and a 12-page fan guide inserted twice, 250 live or pre-recorded radio spots on six local stations and 10 billboards.
  • Under "additional facilities" the NFL requires the usage of three golf courses and two bowling lanes:
Wow that is a lot of demands.

Search for the average temps around MetLife (East Rutherford, NJ) for the month of Feb. It's 30 degrees. Sounds like the NFL went against their own rules.

They granted a waiver.

In other words... if you want the Super Bowl in your city, you have to agree to let the NFL take it over almost completely for the week or two leading up to the game, which means diverting local/city/county/state resources. I haven't read the whole thing, but it wouldn't surprise me if "police escorts for all NFL personnel, at no cost to the league" was in there somewhere too. Some of it I get, but stuff like "Team hotels must agree to televise NFL Network for one year leading up to the Super Bowl" just sounds like the NFL trying to see what it can get away with putting in there.

I don't really see any problem with these requirements. The Super Bowl is the biggest event on planet earth money-wise.

Fans of nfl football may not have a problem with it, but folks who pay taxes and could care less about sports, certainly will. After seeing these requirements, I say their is no chance of the Superbowl being played in Seattle in the near future. Bummer!

You're referring to the police escort right? Yeah, I agree that part is dumb. Not as dumb as taxes paying for stadiums for billionaires... That said, I don't think the actual cost of the police escort is going to be all that high; it's a pretty small fish to fry.

Your seeing typical Seattle thinking. "not in my backyard" Want the world, dont want to do anything to earn it.

It's the same type of thinking that lead to our basketball team leaving for the back woods of oklahoma. Seattle politics, seattle thinking, smh......

They limited scheduled home prime-time games for the reigning champion because of the atmosphere when they play at the Clink.

The league would piss themselves if the Seahawks managed to play a SB at home.

You mean this years wasn't at home? :noidea: Sure sounded like it was. Just ask Peyton on that opening play.

The tax revenue and boost to the economy the Super Bowl brings has to heavily outweigh the costs still. They may not be able to tax the Super Bowl itself but the thousands of jacked up hotel rooms, food, and other tourism has to make some serious money.

I think it was clear enough. Not sure how it's being a 'tough guy' to point out when someone says something entirely idiotic, but it needs no explanation.
