Did not want to see this happen. At least for the amount pushed back. I they restructured just enough toake all 2015 contracts fit under the cap OK, but a quick calculation shows they over mortgaged.

Not sure this wasn't just Steven instead of Jerry.

Well hopefully Carr comes to his senses and takes a pay cut, then maybe we can still add an impact player via free agency or depth on one of the lines?

Ugh. It just feels like the Boys will never get out from under Romo's contract.

Not unexpected. Unless there are significant changes to the contract terms and guarantees it shouldn't change the Cowboys approach to the QB position.

How does the cap hit work if a player retires?

I believe the future bonus money all hit at once. I'm sure the team can spread it out over 2 years like a post June cut.

But then again teams have fought for portions of bonus money back

Makes no sense at all. Shouldn't have been done. Jerry didn't have the nuts to make this move a month ago, he'd have gotten killed for letting Murray walk

How does the cap hit work if a player retires?
All money the retiring player had previously been paid and is guaranteed in the future would accelerate into the current cap counting period. Spotrac has this figure at $44.9M. (Looking at the breakdown shouldn't it be $2M higher?). This includes the current salary which was $17M before the April 1st 2015 restructure. Salaries are not due if players suffer non-footballing injuries so if he had retired for non-footballing reasons in the current cap period the $17M for 2015 wouldn't have been due. Later edit: the salary wouldn't be due - period. That would have reduced the $44M to $27M, which is what Romo was due to count against the cap anyway. If Romo were to retire in the next accounting period, after May12th, his current cap would stay as it is for 2015, (now $14.973M?), and the remaining $30M would count in 2016.

NB. The June 1st cap date changes to May 12th as of this year.

Does this move pave the way for Carr to exit before being declared a June 1 cut? Is there anyone that still believes Carr is a Cowboy in 2015?

This is definitely a strange move on Dallas' (Jerry or Stephen) part, and it makes me think that they are thinking one of two things, both of which I believe are bad ideas. One, they plan on keeping Carr, who has said he will not take a pay cut, and they need the money to sign their draft players also. Two, and I hate to say it, (GULP!!!) they are planning on making a move for AP.

Hope I'm wrong!

It doesn't make sense to restructure Romo to cut Carr this year taking the whole cap hit. You aren't saving anything, or at least not much. If you cut Carr after June 1, you could spread out his cap hit over two years. But by restructuring Romo's contract about half of what would have counted for Carr next year will now count for Romo, plus you have to find a replacement for him this year and account for both Carr's cap hit this year and the new player's affect on the cap.

It could work, I suppose, if they are thinking that one of their draft picks are a sure fire starter this year, but CB's are a hit and miss in the NFL. I don't think it would make sense to count on a starting rookie CB before you even see him in training camp.

Dallas needed to create a few million for McClain right? Also need to have a few million for the draft class. May look to sign one more free agent after June 1 cuts. I don't know what this means for Carr, but I don't see enough money for AP.

Well, we still had $3 mil before the McClain signing (and that includes with Carr's money for 2015). With Romo's restructure that brings it to over $15 mil. You need about $5 mil for draft class and McClain will count as about $1.5 mil toward this year's cap, as I understand that deal. So there is still about $9 mil. available. AP would definitely need to take a pay cut or we would have to restructure another player.

Like I said, I'm hoping I'm wrong.

The Cowboys could have made a small cap move just to cover McClain and another cap move for the rookies later on. It doesn't hurt the Cowboys to add a lot of cap space in 1 hit and use whatever isn't needed on Hardy's 2016 cap hit at the end of the year, (since he's likely to earn way more than his 2015 cap hit in bonuses). 1 move keeps things easier to understand.

They could take AP on his current deal and convert some of his 2015 salary into a bonus. It would pay AP the same amount but delay part of the cap hit. Most people on this board think it would be a bad move.

not so much a bad move....just not the move I expect Dallas to make
still much to do about nothing. I think the Cowboys want to get younger at that position and this is a good draft to do just that
He is/was a great player but his current deal is for $13M this year and $15M next year. I wouldn't want that contract. Supposedly AP is resisting a pay cut to move.

I think the bigger problem is AP thinks himself as the victim. That turns off a lot of people
