Episode 3 was very good in my opinion, and has some promising leads for the future.
I'm surprised they dedicated the first two episodes to only Burnham's backstory - Saru is the only other main character of the series who was even in the first two episodes. Now that she's on the Discovery itself, there's a lot of potential in this series. CBS was stupid not to let people get this far without paying, because I'm guessing people would be a lot more interested in it now, after episode 3, than they were after just seeing episode 1.
The Discovery is a science vessel with over 300 independent scientific experiments going on it at any given time. That's not a bad basis for a series. It kind of looks like the X Files or Fringe set on a Star Trek Spaceship, with the backdrop of a war against the Klingons.
I heard a theory that this is actually a Section 31 ship, and that was pretty convincing. We'll see if that turns out to be the case, but I would love to see that. I always wished that Deep Space Nine had explored Section 31 more deeply.
